Dining Delights

I want to finish my "kitchen talk" off with thoughts on what it is that makes me enjoy being in the kitchen. When you look at these pictures, you might get a glimpse of one of my recent rewards . . . a very excited little girl! We were able to spend a few days in Vegas last week and Natalie asked if we could bake tup-takes with sprinkles (big emphasis on the sprinkles)! Don't you just want to be a child again and enjoy simple things, such as sprinkles? (I have posted the recipe on mennonitegirlscancook.blogspot.com )

In general, I think that we all don't mind doing something when it feels appreciated. So here are seven very simple reasons I keep cooking (or baking):

1) I appreciate the quick break my H and I can have at lunch, when he comes home and we enjoy a bite together. I'm glad he wants to come home.

2) I love that feeling when a meal is well on its way. Family or friends are arriving and hanging out visiting, coming in and checking what's in the pots, nibbling on appetizers, laughing etc.

3) I also love to set tables, especially with fresh flowers or candles.

4) I actually look forward to a whole day set aside to do nothing but bake. It's quite relaxing. When I think of it, I like to listen to music, but I don't need to. I like going from one task to the next and pulling goodies out of the oven, feeling like something got accomplished.

5) I love having the grand kids at the kitchen counter, big smiles, waiting for the next sugar roll up pancake, counting how many they have eaten, giggling, making faces at each other etc.

6) I like the talking that happens when doing dishes with someone. Some of my best talks with my mom, while growing up, were while we were doing dishes.

7) I can't forget to mention the joy that comes from eating with loved ones. Maybe one reason cooking is so rewarding, is because eating is something we all have in common and it causes us to relax and enjoy being together.

. . . and he does . . .

That post brings tears to my eyes ... the part that says "and he does". Can't wait to cook with you sooo soon!!! Paet has cut out a picture from a magazine of cupcakes because he wants you to make some. He told me the other day that his favourite food is cupcakes.

You got that right...food is an interest we all have in common. The best of times are those spent with friends and family around the table...and if the food is good, all the better!

You inspire me my friend!!! Maybe there is still hope for me...baking 'tupcakes' together looks like it is so much fun. I had better learn how pretty quick.

Great list! I agree. I remember the last couple years when Andrew and I were hosting a homegroup from our church, the only "rule" that the pastors had for homegroup leaders was that they MUST serve food (or get someone to bring something along to serve)at each meeting. The reason they gave was that people bond so well while eating, and that builds community.

Those are the reasons to cook. I had the best time with my mom doing dishes also. I'm trying hard now to recreate some of that after Sunday lunch. I call one of my adult children to dry...they all come at once and it's too much in the kitchen....to I request by name...
Kitchens are the heart of the family.
