Quick Trip
This past weekend we packed our toothbrushes, pjs, a couple of movies and got on the old Fraser Canyon Highway going north.
We had not done this for a long time and the beautiful scenic drive through the mountains kept me entertained for a big part of the drive.
The tunnels always bring back memories of the fun they were as children.
The Fraser and then the Thompson River wind through the valley and then the canyon for many miles on end.

This creature landed on our windshield. (sorry about the blur . . . but I was glad to have the glass between us)
As we got further north, toward the Cariboo, we saw the devastation that the pine beetle has brought to many forests. I had heard about it, but until you actually see it, you don't realize how sad it is.
After a four and a half hour drive we saw the reason people move up to this area.
The lakes, surrounded by mountains and forests of pine, spruce and fir, look like blue glass with the most gorgeous reflections in them.
These white tailed mule deer hardly moved when they saw us coming. My camera does not have a good zoom, so this was taken up close, from the car.
I also had to keep taking photos of flowers and meadows along the road. Lupin and Indian paint brush bloom in wild abundance almost everywhere right now.
We wound ourselves through numerous back roads, looking for the right address, wondering how in the world they found this place to live. My H's sister and brother-in-law moved here four years ago. The short version of the story is that they found a piece of land, parked their fifth wheel on it, chopped down trees and began to build a house.

So fun! It quickly becomes another world when you leave the valley, doesn't it? And only a few hours away.
that is a beautiful area. looks very isolated, is it?
nice that you could go for a quick visit and enjoy some time away.
That looks like a nice little piece of paradise! So sad about the pine beetle damage.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us. The caribou is a fantastic place, to retreat.
I know the feeling about driving for hours looking for that property.
And then alas, it's found.
My brother and sister in law lived in a cabin around 100 mile for awhile when was still younger. . and I loved it there. .the air smells so clean . .
What a wonderful place to live. Glad you got a get away.
It really is a spectacular drive, isn't it? Such different scenery than here on the coast. Glad you had a nice visit with John and Mary.
Wow - looks like a great weekend getaway! I've never seen where U. John and A. Mary live, so I enjoyed seeing all your photos.
Love, Bonnie
Looks like you had a lovely mini holiday and great weather as well. I love travelling by car/truck anywhere in this great country of ours.
I also love your new header. I assume it is in your rennovated back yard. Very lovely!
It is great to see you & Dad doing things together like this ... truly enjoying your "empty nest"! Nice to see where U.John & A.Mary live ... beautiful place but so sad about the beetles! These beetles were living in my window frames here in Indo ... we had to get the windows all replaced with a different kind of wood.
Reminds me of trips when I was a kid when a tunnel or two could make our whole day :)
Beautiful post! Hubby and I saw similar images on our trip to Chilliwack last week! In all the 40+ years of traveling through the Rockies, this is the first time we got to see the Mt. Robson peak with all its snow - both trips - coming and going!! I, too, was deeply saddened to see the pine beetle damage - it brought tears to my eyes.
I simply love your new header!
