One of the most satisfying elements of blogging has been to find a way to express my feelings about things I see around me. It has given me more reason to make the moments count, to find good in the mundane average day to day things and to appreciate the blessings that have been poured out on me.
.
I love the fact that someday my grandchildren may look at the things we did and see my perspective on them as they were growing up. In these pages they will find some history, some things to laugh at, things I enjoy and more about my faith.
.
.
For the reasons above, I could make it a private blog. However, I also have had reasons to keep it public. When I meet readers who tell me that they are encouraged by my posts, I feel blessed to be able to do that. I also feel a sense of unworthiness to be paid such a compliment, because I’m just a normal person who happens to have time to write.
.
This brings me to that nagging question brought on by a recent comment. I feel somewhat like Anne of Green Gables in the scene where she has to apologize to Marilla after Marilla has said some nasty things to her. I wonder . . . how does a person judge someone by having seen them somewhere and then, on that basis, disclaim everything she has written for the past two years? I guess it can happen.
.
I’ve looked in the mirror. What do I look like? It's just plain old me . . . getting older. My eyelids are starting to give me a serene look. I have a long nose - always wished for a cute one. Does my haircut make me look snobby? Would I look more approachable if I wore a messy ponytail? What is it that makes a person look like a “Yes” person or a “No” person . . . someone you can easily approach and work with . . . or someone who is difficult to know or get along with. How do I look to people who only see me and never interact with me?
.
.
Maybe blogging has been a way for me to seem more outgoing. It’s a place where it does not matter if I can’t immediately find the right words, a place where I can delete and restate what I really want to say, without stumbling over my words. It’s a way of public speaking without having to get up in front.
Having said that, I easily forget that is exactly what I am doing and people are watching me. They may pass me in the grocery isle or in a church and see a woman who is oblivious to them, because I don’t even know that they know something about me.
.
Having said that, I easily forget that is exactly what I am doing and people are watching me. They may pass me in the grocery isle or in a church and see a woman who is oblivious to them, because I don’t even know that they know something about me.
.
And so I have set myself up. I have a choice to make and I will choose to grow by it. I’m not a tough duck - letting the water slide over my wings type of gal, who will shove this kind of comment under the rug. I want to learn to put on a “yes” face for people I do not know and not allow my insecurities to come across as not having the time of day for them.
I will continue to be real in my posts without dwelling on the negative and bringing up trash. My wish is to speak of things that edify and shine a light on the path before us. May God help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak and especially slow to judge.

I love that you blog. And having known you every single day of my life, I can say that you are being you in this blog! :)
You know, I am a stranger to you and I don't even live in your area, but I don't get the sense from the commenters who know you including your children, that you are phony. I have read a lot of blogs where I don't get this same sense. I feel sorry for the commenter who felt the need to lash out at you and thought you could use every encouraging comment so you wouldn't be discouraged in your blogging. We don't expect you to be perfect. One of the most memorable posts that I have read on your blog was the one where you yelled at your grandchildren. Very forthcoming. Love your blog, and wouldn't like to see you quit on account of a few naysayers. Have a great day!!
Eva
I have been tuning into your blog for a while already and want to encourage you. Thank you for sharing honestly who you are. I have always found you to be a gracious lady (I use to go to Central Heights).
First: I love your blog. I love the way you see things....
Second: the people that say ugly things are not content in their own skin and your blog may touch a nerve that they don't want to deal with in themselves.
Third: Jesus is using your blog and you to be transparent in an un-transparent world. That is a tough place to be.
I don't blog because I deal with things in the place where we live.
That is a tough place to be as well. People see you up close and personal.
We all have to be open to what the Lord has ordained from the beginning of time.
Keep doing your blog and pray for those people that leave unkind words.
Love you dear sister in the Lord.
You have a beautiful way of expressing yourself in writing and I appreciate that. It's a different kind of gift and art. Some people are better in person then they are on the written page. I'm reminded of the apostle Paul who seemed to be more comfortable and bold in his writings then he was in person. I get tongue tied in public and sometimes come away thinking why did I say that or did I say the right thing. I'm distracted in public. I find it easier to access my true feelings in writing then in speech. Have a wonderful day Anneliese.
Anneliese, having known you now for 30 some years I smile at the idea of perceptions and those we all convey. I have always noticed that you pause before you speak. .while I speak and then pause. You are not quick to reply. .you rather think a moment first. You are not the party animal in the group. .you are the one sitting on the arm of a couch listening in and then adding to conversations when there is a pause.
Because I know you. .I know your heart. I know how you often struggle about what to post because you exactly do not want to come across like you know how to dress or that your house looks so nice but rather your heart is to encourage and to teach what you have learned.
It is a vulnerable place to blog publicly. Thank you for this post today. It will encourage the rest of us bloggers when we face the inevitable comments that would make us want to hang our head.
I love your blog, having found it through the MGCC blog. Your genuine honesty and willingness to reveal who are is awesome. Too often we wear our masks and I appreciate gleaning a glimpse of who you really are through your writing.... Thank you for sharing.
I'm so glad you haven't gone private - I have enjoyed your blog for a long time. I too am more of a private person but have not attemmpted to put my feelings in a blog. But I so enjoy reading your thoughts and can sense the realness of them. I don't know you but don't for a moment believe they are contrived. I don't live in your community but have actually seen you in passing twice! One time we passed (you were with your husband) going in and out of a a condo and we said hi to each other - you were smiling and very pleasant! You know, just continue to be who you are, (you won't always be smiling!)and you can't worry about what us anonymous readers 'out there' are seeing! No one is perfect so don't put that on yourself. Ahh... perceptions - good blog.
As well I'm a stranger to you, but enjoy how you bring warmth and kindness altogether with a great sense of style. And I try to emulate just that in my daily life, from prayer to table settings! You are very inspiring and I'm very glad you blog, I'm that much better for it! Many thanks from that harried working-outside the home mom who is looking forward to being a stay-at-home grandma someday. I'll be that much of a better one because of you! And following you helps get me through some awful days at work - its comforting to know there are still people out there with graciousness and values. Much love to you Anneliese. And all the Mennonite ladies!
phI have been reading your blog for quite a while now, and enjoy it very much.
I do attend the church you do and you often sit behind our family...we are the family with many adopted children. I have noticed you very quiet...and the odd smile to us. Your husband is more outgoing than you...but that is OK because I am the more outgoing one in the "group"...my husband doesn't do as well in a crowd and there is nothing wrong with that. That is how God makes each of us...so very differently. If we were all the same how boring that would be LOL.
We have moved to the smaller service as we are enjoying a more "family" oriented service, so we don't see you often. But I have found myself now "quiet one now"...and after reading the last comment that was made to you, it got me to thinking that maybe NOW, I am giving off the same feelings to others. Do they think me snobby, or stuck-up....I really had to search my heart and see if it could be true. But in fact it was not...I have just become quite shy (which is so not like me ..maybe it's the change from a large group to a smaller group...not sure)....but people could perceive me as stuck-up. So even though this person Tammi said that, I also think that for myself I am going to use it for the positive in my own life....I am going to ask God to give me more boldness this coming Sunday....more boldness to welcome others...smile at those around me...shake hands with my neighbour.
I know there is always room for improvement in my own life. I am so sorry that sometimes people leave comments that are so hurtful.
Glad you are keeping your blog open...mine is private right now, so I will leave this as anonymous...but you probably will know who I am.
Have a blessed week.
Connie
BTW: Don't worry about the singing thing...have you ever heard me sing? I sing to no one but God (and I know He loves it)...and your voice cannot be any worse than mine or that of one of my African daughters (her gift is drawing LOL)...and you are praising the Father who gave you a voice no matter what tune you sing in. LOL.
I see a kind heart, a loving spirit and a zest for God. I call 'em like I see 'em. It's like my daughter's softball coach tells her, let them bad mouth you and say mean things.Don't say anything, but let your time on the field speak for itself. I'm sorry that naysayers do exist. Prove them wrong, my dear, sweet and hip grandmother friend:)
I am sorry. I know what it is like to be misunderstood. I spent 30 years trying to be my MIL's friend, but nothing I ever did was good enough. And it seemed that she was determined to misunderstand nearly everything I said or did. I finally came to realize making her happy was not my responsibility. God made it clear that all He wanted me to do was to love her unconditionally and leave the results to Him. I believe, if we listen, God will show us areas where we need to change or improve, but we can not be everything to everybody and He doesn't require that of us. We are to love Him, love others, and be alert to the Holy Spirit as he directs us. JSYK, you have blessed and encouraged me and I am grateful for the ministry you have to all of us in the blogging world!
I look forward to your blog everyday that you post and I certainly do not get the sense that you are phony. Clearly you have been gifted in the home making department and there is nothing wrong with that....you are an inspiration to others of us who have gifts elsewhere but can appreciate your gift. Please don't make this blog private...it is one of the highlights of my day and I have now started reading Lovella's blog and your daughter's blog as well and enjoying them both.
I smiled when I saw 'my back side' here today. I want to encourage you to continue to be who who are. You have a beautifully sweet gentle spirit. You are fun to be with and I have grown to love and admire your transparency. I hope that each of us can grow through times that are hurtful or unpleasant. We will never be all things to all people.
I was sad when I saw that you had to endure a stab like that...it reminded me that my Mom, who is now 91 and has lots of friends of all ages, was a very shy person when she was young, and many people put it down to being "stuck up"...just shows that we need to get to know someone before we judge them, and even then, as someone said, it is God who really knows our hearts..and that's what counts! I really enjoy your blog!
I have been reading your blog for awhile now, but I'm not sure if I have left a comment yet. This issue has compelled me to come out of the woodwork.
I was first attracted to your blog by a post you did about matching up different outfits. I think you are about the same age as me and I found this post so helpful for dressing with a sense of style at this stage of life. I think you look so pretty and classy and your hair is just beautiful. I think that you have a great sense of style and I appreciate when you share tips with us.
I am sorry that you received a negative comment like that. As I would have expected, you addressed it with class.
Though we have never met and my opinions may not matter, I felt I had to show my support. I hope you will continue to share your blog with us.
I love that you blog for the same reasons I do and for the words that you speak which go directly to my heart.
I'm so sorry for that comment. I'm glad that you are keeping your blog public. I enjoy coming here - I appreciate the things you share - and I have been blessed by your honesty - especially thinking of the entry where you raised your voice to the grands - I had to chuckle - I think I'll find myself in the same boat.
Sending hugs and thanks from across the country!
The maturity in the way you have handled Tammi's comment is simply exemplary and God-honoring!
I found it interesting that Tammi actually signed her name to the anonymous post.
You have such a forgiving heart that who knows, once you get to know one another, you may become friends. I know that the evil one wouldn't like that one bit!
Blessings to you!
hello i,m from villa general belgrano cordoba argentina, i love see your blog and got blessing my heart whit your experiences thank.karen
I too send greetings from Argentina. Strange but I do not know the other person that wrote you from Argentina. Now I am curious. Anyways, I too want to say how thankful I am for your blog. You have touched me in so many ways. Being far away from home it is great to see glimpses of it through your blog and I have learned many things from you when it comes to hospitality. That is such a ministry in my mind and an art that is sadly dying out in the generation that is coming up. I too commend you on how you have used this situation that the enemy wanted for evil and turned it into a lesson for us all. I look forward to meeting you one day and thanking you in person for sharing and ministering to many.
Blessings,
Leana
I've been on the receiving end of negative perception as well. I feel your pain.
As so many of your friends have already stated, you are a beautiful, genuine woman of integrity whom God is using through this very public forum to spread His message.
Do NOT waver - truth always wins!
Love in Christ, Vange
ps. sing anyway :)
I do not know you well, having found your blog I don't know how and having been a lurker for awhile before I started commenting. I will say that most of the comments I have seen on your blog have been positive and uplifting. I would guess that people could have a bad day and be negative, or maybe they don't believe the way you do and are trying to put your belief down through their comments. I would remind you that 99% of everything I have ever read on here is positive. Don't let your heart be troubled over the one person who is not looking at the good that you do. You are so much more than that one comment. Don't judge yourself through anyone else's eyes. Your eyes and God's eyes are the only two that really know what has been going on in your life. Love your blog! You are totally amazing.
This is so heartwarming to see all of these positive comments from your family members to the "lurkers" in the woodwork! I just have to add my 2 cents worth!
Anneliese, one of the most important things you have taught me through your blog is to evaluate and appreciate life's events through a "season" lens. This has always been a growing edge for me, and always will be. I am trying to live this life a day at a time, and keep it in perspective of the season I'm in. And YOU are certainly one who inspires me daily in that effort!
I have been reading your blog and I love it! I have to say that you have inspired me in so many ways. First by all the different ideas you have shown on your blog (I have used lots of them mostly the decorating and cooking tips). My mother lives 15 minutes from my house and she visits maybe once a year. I love that you make so much time for your children and grandchildren. I have children of my own and I feel like you have been a GREAT example to me (through this blog) of what a mother and grandmother should be.Thanks! Alyssa
This is such a thoughtful and perceptive post Anneliese. I love the way you see both the easy and the difficult things that come your way as opportunities to learn and grow. A dear old man once told me how we as Christians should walk around with an "open" face" meaning that we should show ourselves as approachable at all times.
Your light shines bright through this blog and lights up many a dark place. Keep shining for Christ.
Wow!!..I've just read this...and am reminded about perception...
I think that we have all experienced being perceived wrong at various times.
It seems like many of your readers have been immensely blessed by your posting.
I was so encouraged today again and uplifted when I came here...reading comments from others that are uplifting also and the amount of unconditional love that keeps pouring from your heart.
You have been a blessing to many and that is what God honors.
Mom,
I am so sorry that someone said something so hurtful to you, especially in a place where you come and open your heart, leaving yourself vulnerable. I am quite speechless actually! I think that the way you handled the situation shows your real character beautifully...not an emotional outburst of hurt feelings, but a response of self-reflection, graciousness and sincerity. We (your family) are so proud of you- who you are and what you've accomplished! You're beautiful in every way!
I'm sitting here, overwhelmed at the outpouring of love from so many of you ... I almost feel like I've been at my own open mike funeral. Isn't that when we say these kind of things?I hardly know what to say ... my daughters, my friends and friends I did not know I had ...thank you, Kristal, Eva, Joyce, Sandy, Ellen, Lovella, Anita, Anonymous, Lisa, Connie, Amy, Debbie, Merla, Kathy, Millie, Happy@Home, Yolanda, Kathie, Karin, Karen, Leana, Vange, PattyAnne, Kathy, Alyssa, Bev, Marg, and Kari.
I did want you to know that I feel more sorry for "Tammi" than for myself by now. I have learned something about myself... How I coud be perceived by some... and I also want to pray for the "Tammies" who feel like they are invisible. Whoever you are, God loves you. I hope I'll be able to show that in person, not just on my blog.
I love your blog! I visit several times a week and am always encouraged by what you write. We've never met, but I feel that you are my friend. Thank you for sharing your faith so openly. My walk with Jesus has been strengthened through your blog!
Annelise, I too am so sorry for the comment that you received. I don't always leave you a comment, but I do read your blog regularly. I have never seen you in person, but if I do I will be sure to tell you that I am one of your readers. Blogging the way you, and many of your 'grown up girldfriends' do, leaves you very vulnerable. But that is what I so admire about you and am deeply encouraged by... Thank you for not going private. Thank you for sharing this blessing with me and so many others. I love your realness and the authenticity that you show. I agree with Kari, your response post shows your real character. I loved how you also said that blogging has helped you keep a story for your kids and grandkids and that it helps you focus on the blessings in your life. Thank you for sharing that gift!--Amber
I'm reminded of Joseph's comment .. "You meant it for evil but God meant it for good!"
One negative comment... dozens of encouraging ones in response!
And this post is such a good reminder to all of us that 'perception' based on casual observation is most often false!
I love you...
I to am a follower of your blog and am blessed by it on so many levels. From practical advise on decorating to blessing, not impressing others. I just had to post what I read in my devotional this morning that so applies to this conversation. It is by Rick Warren in regards to not seeing things in faith, this goes out to Tammi primarily but hopefully will bless you and your readers as well. I'll just post this quote:
In one of those grand, mysterious paradoxes of our faith, Jesus says we should see the unseen. The way to do that is to stay intimate with him and to let the Holy Spirit direct our sight, both our physical eyes and our spiritual eyes.
When we believe that reality is confined to only what we see, we become trapped into thinking the only truth is what we see. We become prisoners to our perceptions. Time and time again we see Jesus moving the focus from the seen to the unseen. He knew that for those who walk by faith, appearances are never the ultimate reality.
So whatever Tammi has seen, or most likely not seen, she has been trapped by her false perceptions. By reading what you have done in your blog we can all perceive your heart of God. Blessings to you!
I'm 16 hours ahead of you on this planet, but it looks like I've missed alot!
Mom, isn't amazing how we can be perceived by those who can't read our hearts? I sure have experienced this living in Indonesia.
I am so thankful that God sees my heart and knows me.
Thank you for blogging ... it has helped me feel closer to home ... and to know you, even though you're my Mom, even better. You are for real. I love you. I miss you.
I've just caught up with this discussion. Human beings are funny creatures one nasty comment can overshadow the thousands of positive ones. I guess we are all striving for perfection in our own way. I say the nasty comment says everything about the writer and nothing about you. Your life is filled with grace and the love of family and friends. Continue to do his work and spread the good news in your blog. Angharad
18 years ago this month we arrived penniless, strangers in Abbotsford from Africa. Anneliese you took me/us in from the moment we met. I immediately sensed your genuineness, love for God, gift of hospitality and that you were the quieter, kind, sensible, classy, knowledgeable person I needed for a friend as we settled our family here. My first impressions were "wow, how fortunate could I be that God would have someone like you willing and ready to be my friend in Canada". I have nothing but deep admiration for you, gratefulness and a big smile that He could give me a friend who is everything that I'm not and wish I were!! and there isn't an ounce of envy ... just LOVE. Thanks my friend for being sooo Real and "Jesus in skin" so often for me. Gloria
When I was a kid I lived out int he country...we walked most places, including to school (when we were silly enough to miss the bus!) and to Gervin's Corner for the book mobile in summer. We walked along roads that twisted and turned and sometimes cut across fields to get to the little store at the corner of two roads...all along the way there were barns, big rock outcrops, tall trees, blackberry thickets, streams, and other "landmarks" to show me the way and keep me oriented in the right direction...your blog is one of my landmarks now, and I would really miss it, were you to leave us stranded out here in a world that is not always familiar and easy to navigate in...keep dropping your crumbs of wisdom and love to those of us on the journey with you....:)
Dear Anneliese - I've just come back to this post to get caught up on the comments - so sweet! I've never met you other than through this blog and as one of the Mennonite girls, but I've always felt, intuitively, that you were exactly like the person "Gloria" described. One that I would love to count as a friend. I hope the sting from Tammy's comment has disappeared in the love poured out here.
Many blessings and thanks again,
Kathie
