Scrapbooking 101

January has become the month when I go through all of my pictures in Picasa from the past year and choose the highlights. Then I order all the photos at once, kind of thinking them through as to how they will fit on a page . . . so that I can fill a page or double page on a given subject.

I'm not serious about embellishments. It's basically about the photos and getting an overview of the year. I choose a photo album and get an assortment of coordinating paper that flows easily for the whole album.
This year I found a nice K&Company pad with 36 double sided, mostly black and cream patterned sheets. The pages in the album are black and I mixed them up with the pages from the pad.

My favorite tool is the cutter. Very important.

The black and cream patterned paper pad also had a splach of colored pages and I added some to match those.

It's always kind of hard to know how to begin .  . . this time I chose three photos that depict three highlights of the year. . .  Lacey's birth, a family trip to Disneyland and Koen's birth.

Then I lay out the next two pages and work on two at a time, so that it basically looks like one page.

You get the idea.

Some pages get very full!

I allow for little spots where I can add some details when I'm done with the whole album.

Sometimes I'll add a bit of embellishment . . .

Here I used part of a card that was given to me by a friend.

If I use a colored page for background on one side, I'll use that color for framing the photos beside it.
That's all.  The simpler I keep it the quicker it will be done . . .  and even so . . . it's not happening fast enough . . . I've only done up the the summer. But it should be done soon now.
And maybe. . . just maybe . . . next year will be the year I try the online book.

Anneliese. .what a beautiful job you do. When you told me you don't do it very fancy I imagined far less. I so admire you girls that have consistently made the effort to record your pictures in beautiful albums. One of these days I need to get going on my picassa albums once again.

Oh, I can't believe I did that again... in my head he is Koen but when I don't think about what I'm saying Landon comes out. Shows how little I've held him.

Great job Anneliese! I don't have the gift or the inclination to scrapbook, just happy to keep my Picasa organized:)

This should motivate me to get moving on my scrapbooks! Not sure that it will though. Yours look so nice. Speaking from experience, the online books are so much easier, for me. I still need to finish Ben's baby book...he's now 9!

Beautiful, Anneliese! I take the lazy way out & do my albums on-line...but they will never look like yours. Those are real treasures.

Wow! I am impressed. I love the way scrapbooks look, but I just don't have the patience! I'm doing good just to get photos printed and in an album in a timely fashion! I'm still working on the wedding pictures from Sept!

Isn't choosing the pictures the hardest part? Or does limiting the count make the choices more obvious. I have done lots of albums from pre-digital era, now there are so many pictures to choose from I am afraid to dive in again.
You album pages are beautiful.

Beautiful pages. I have neglected by scrapbooking for to long. I still have a pile waiting for me. Reading your post had me longing to put everything side this weekend and focus on my pages. Not sure that will happen but thank you for the inspiration and reminding me about my waiting project.

How amazing and what a piece of artwork. That is s areal labor of love...the time and efforts that you use to creatively work them till your eyes are fascinated by the results.
I've gone over to the online system and love it as I can make duplicates and give them to the family members.

You have inspired me to get my boxes of pictures out and try to organize them in some way! I also want to say I enjoyed so much seeing everyday the side bar with "Great is Thy Faithfulness" - such a beautiful song as are all the others you are posting. He is always with us - I want to be as faithful to Him. Thank You for your beautiful blog ... and I love your recipes!

Good for you Anneliese - I love that you are getting your books done! I'm so far behind I hardly know where to start. I'm thinking I may use your way of deciding what to scrapbook - a few events for the year, a few pictures of each.
That's brilliant.

Anneliese,

If you are able to answer me, I would be very grateful. I know very little about scrapbooking (not very big in Australia, where I am). It will soon be my oldest son's 21st birthday, and I would like to put together something similar. Do you glue the photos and paper/embellishments into the book? If so, do you use special glue? I would love to do something like you have done.

Sonya,
Here we have special double sided tape that comes on a roll ... tiny 1cm X 1cm squares.
Using tape makes it easier to remove the photos if you ever need to in the future, because the little squares just get dabbed under each corner. You could also use photo corners. Do you have those? I hope that helps.

Thanks Anneliese,

The double sided tape sounds brilliant. We do have the photo corners too, I'm sure. Thanks for your help.

PS I love your wardrobe posts - they are very inspiring.
