Lunchbox Memories

It's a funny thing, how food can bring back memories.
I rarely have tea for lunch, but when I do
and when I have it with a ham, lettuce and mayo sandwich on a bun,
I am back in my classroom opening my lunchbox, so lovingly packed.

Our first year in Canada we were very aware of the cold;
that is the only reason I can think of now
why my sandwich came accompanied with a thermos of hot tea.
We sat at our school desk to eat and then went out to walk around.

I remember the lunchtable in my high school cafeteria.
The one around the corner by the door - a daily meeting place.
And Fridays were my favorite, when mom gave me a dollar
for the thrill of getting a tray and buying a hotdog, a long john and a drink.

I baked chocolate cupcakes with sprinkles for the grands today
To be enjoyed after school . . . I ate one too
and realized it's my very favorite cupcake.
The same that found itself into my lunch year after year.

It's always fun when you can find similar things about each other.
If I choose to have a sandwich...it's always ham and cheese. I only had peanut butter as a child, but now it's ham and cheese on a bun.I love baking for that after school snack.
Cute post.

I can remember always waiting for lunch time at school to see what Mom would have packed. I can't remember many disappointments.
Coming home to a snack was a highlight. Good memories.
Ham and cheese on a bun sounds good..might just be my lunch today:)I'll even brew tea to go with that!

When we moved back to Canada we were so cold for a long time. Funny how our bodies react.
Your lunch looks great - ham and cheese on a good homemade bun!

such a pleasure to read your recollections of lunches. It is fun to have good memories triggered. My mom packed me a lunch everyday. In 6th grade I was chosen to be cafeteria helper so I got a free lunch from the cafeteria each day...I enjoyed that for a change from the sack lunch...

My mum wasn't very inspired when it came to packing lunches, so I don't have too many outstanding memories. Perhaps her lunches, though, account for my love for peanut butter!

OH those memories are so precious. I don't remember ever getting a dollar to spend but I do remember hot dog days when my mom was busy in the school kitchen wrapping those yummy hot dogs in napkins.
