Retro Hairstyle

I was looking through the latest Anthropologie catalog . . . which is always a glimpse into a favorite store of one of my girls . . . when I was stopped short . . .
what about that hairstyle?

The same model kept showing up . . . and I had to go find an old familiar photo to see . . .

I'm sure her hair loosend up a bit after a few hours . . . circa 1954.
Who would have thought she'd fit in here?

My mom is wearing braids that are wrapped around her head . . .
Can you tell by how I said that, just what I've thought of it?
Looking at her now, I see more.
She is beautiful!

And . . . sigh . . .  when I was little
I took her thick braid which she had cut off by that time
(keeping it in a special place)
and held it against my ear . . . trying to imagine long  hair like that.
It's a photo of my vanity - even  as a five year old -
only in my memory.

Good Morning Anneliese.
My grandmother had similar braids wrapped around her head. They hung low to her waist when she was combing them and I loved watching her put her hair together in minutes. That was your mom...and the other one looks just like your Kari....

My aunt had such long hair - she could sit on it. I remember her drying it outside in the breeze. I loved watching her brush it. She wore it in a low French bun.

Your mom is a beauty.

Then, women did their own hair and I think they knew instinctively what suited them best. Simply beautiful.

Do you have the braid? I have two of my grandmother's. She died when I was ten...I loved her so much. Having those means the world to me. Sweet picture of your mom.

OH I love this post. Braids are such a rage right now. I could never do a proper braid in my hair because it is too fine. I always admire thick braids. You are right...you mom is beautiful. It would be lovely to see that hair with a few wisps loose after a busy day.

Who would have thought...that your mom's long-ago hair-do would show up on today's fashion pages? Yes, she was beautiful.

Everything that goes around comes around doesn't it? So neat that you had the picture to prove it! :-)

I found this so interesting, in that upstairs in our attic is my mother's hope chest, and in it is a one of her long pigtails from when she wore her hair like your mother. I remember holding it up to me and wondering the same as you. I could not believe you wrote that.

My daugther's store favorite is Anthropologie too, but I did not see that picture. What a great post! It is true, what goes around, does come around.
