Turning Two

She wakes, a baby, soother in her mouth
standing, wadded blanket hugged against her chest
a ray of awareness settling in
Little legs run down the hall
checking to see who's ready for the fun
of a brand new day barely begun!

She knows what she wants
milk in a cup raised with watchful eyes
a spoon held tight to feed herself
She can do what big girls do
moments mixed with I can't and I can!
She knows how to change a plan.

She's a tease, tossing curls
giggles when tickled, begging for more
Chubby hands fitting puzzle pieces
eyes gazing in wonder as stories unfold
She's a tired mommy dragging her doll
Goes back to bed, a baby, suddenly not so small.

The days go by and you don't know when
it happened you spoke and she understood
A little mind grasping, communicating
laughing, responding, fully engaged
Growing from baby to little girl
is sadness and sweetness wrapped up in a whirl.

Happy Birthday to our sweetie! Sending hugs and kisses over the mountains, Papa and Mimi

I know exactly what you mean. We have a granddaughter turning two tomorrow, and another in early March turns two. We hear a lot of "Mine" and "My turn" which means "I can do it myself". She says 'Bye bye" and waves us off when she wants to handle something on her own--such as hand washing. They are amazing and wonderful and you have captured the essence in your poem.

This is a lovely poem Anneliese along with a very cute picture of your grandbaby who wants to be like a big girl at two. So very cute!

Teddie fan here!
Your poem...I know exactly what you mean. Each new motor skill, verbal skill is both sweet and sad. I may have mentioned my friend's poem about how each child is not an endangered species but are with each day an extinct being. That newborn, one year old, four year old, ten year old...oh to have a day with that child again, but blessedly and sorrowfully that child at that age will never be visited with again, save in memory.
The author Jean Kerr (Please Don't Eat the Daisies) mused that not only does one lose one's youth, one also loses the youth of one's child. Seeing lines forming around my adult child's eyes is harder than seeing the lines form on my own face.

Your comment brought those sentimental tears to my eyes, Jill. How true.
