Dropbox Tutorial (for sharing photos)

I think I can speak for a number of us when I say that our day to day life
is an interesting adventure from the kitchen to the computer.
One day I'm fine tuning the basics of making Perishky or pinching Zwieback
and the next I'm trying to figure out how to upload a video  to share
or how to send a whack of photos to someone.
One moment we may be planning a menu on a group email
and the next moment the plan is put in place on a shared google document.

Like I said in my last post . . . installing a new gadget on my computer can be
time consuming when I do not understand the way the steps are explained online.
It's very much like learning another language and, unless I have need of it, I will not learn it.

Dropbox has been one of those things I had to learn recently and,
although the process, first time around, took me a few hours,
in the end . . . once I knew what to look for and when to right click
it only took a few minutes.
So, no more flash drives and trying to figure out how to get that to the right person.

First off, you need to install Dropbox by following the prompts.  This is a free service. Once that is done you will find the Dropbox icon on your taskbar for quick access.  Here you see it on the left sidebar in my Pictures.

The idea is that you can send a file via drop box by sharing the link with whomever you wish. Only the ones you share the link with will be able to access it.

So, first you need to create the folder. I like to choose my photos from my Picasa and then export them to a folder in my Pictures. You can also go straight to Pictures and open a new folder,  copying and pasting the photos you want to share into that folder.

Once you have chosen the photos in Picasa and clicked Export, you will get this pop up. You can rename the folder or just leave it and then click on Export.

It will take you to your Pictures where your exported/new folder will be highlit. Right click on this folder and you will get a pop up with a number of options. Click on Move to Dropbox.

Okay... now check the taskbar at the bottom of your screen and you will see Dropbox  . . .Click on it.

It will take you back to the Dropbox library/folder. Look for your new folder, right click on it and open it. You will see the photos uploading. Once they have uploaded they will have a checkmark on them.

When they are all uploaded go back (to Dropbox) and right click on the folder name. Then click to Share Dropbox link.

Now you have to look quick or you miss it . . . a bubble will show up (highlit) above the bottom bar for just a second . . . Click on the bubble. If you missed it or wish to send it later, go to the dropbox icon on the taskbar (dropbox.com), click on your file and right click option to share link.

You will see the link with the photos.
Click the Share button on the top right.

The pop up will give you the link. You do not need to worry about that. Just put in the email of the person you wish to share with and send. That's it. At least that is how I got it . . . possibly coming in the back door.

PS I did only a few photos for the example, but the idea here is that you can easily share way more photos than you'd send in an email. Great for sharing with family and friends who live out of town. To save free space, you can delete the link after the time you choose. To learn more about dropbox in general, check out this video with Anson Alexander, but don't forget to let me know if this was helpful.

I admit I do not want Dropbox or Google to own my family and personal pix. Apparently, that is what happens? We do not have copyright anymore when we do that. People have been surprised to find their pictures on Google Image.

Am I missing something?

Hi Sharon,
You have a good point there. That is why I prefer not to share photos on Google. I feel like I've lost control of where the photos go. But, if I understand Dropbox correctly, it is still private to whom I allow to view and I can remove them when I want to. I do not think they will own the photos, but I can check that out. Many offices use dropbox to share private documents.

This is what I found in the Dropbox terms of service.
"We want to be 100% clear that you own what you put in your Dropbox. We don’t own your stuff. And the license you give us is really limited. It only allows us to provide the service to you. Nothing else."
(in good old English) =)

I've been wanting to try this for some time and this encourages me to do this. I have exceeded my free space in Picaso and am paying a minimal monthly fee but perhaps with this I could eliminate my fee and better organize my pictures. I'm excited to try this. Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial on this Anneliese!

Hi Rosella,
I hope I explained this correctly in that Dropbox does not replace Picasa. It's a temporary place to put a folder of photos you wish to share with someone privately and then delete it. There is a cost if you store more than 2GB.

As to cost for blogging purposes, there is a small yearly fee for that but Picasa, to store/organize photos on your computer, is free. I hope this clarifies any misunderstanding.

Thanks Anneliese - I think I'm understanding how this works and that it's a great tool for sharing files and pictures privately.
I've downloaded the app and am playing around with it.
Thanks again for your help!

Thanks Anneliese, that is very clear and makes me want to look into it more.

But what do they gain then if they don't have any rights to our photos; what do they gain as a business by storing our photos for us. There has to be some pay back for them.

P. S. I dropped Picasa and Flickr for the same reasons. Maybe I'm over-cautious. I've always admired that you share your pix and I get a lot of pleasure out of it. I'd be sad if you didn't.

Sharon,
I think that what Dropbox gets out of it is that people, businesses who want to store more than 2 GB have to pay for the services. So, maybe people really need that much storage and will pay... but for those who just want to try it and can keep it to a minimum it's free. I'm not planning to use it that much and I delete as I go. It's the best way I've found to easily share pictures with family.
I use picasa to scan all the pictures I upload from my camera and from my scanner... over 800 folders now. It is a quick way to look through the photos. I have never had to pay and I really like the easy editing options. When it crashed recently, I called our shop computer tech and he re-installed the program. It's all good again.
It's Google that keeps asking me about scanning my photos and I just click no. They have taken the liberty to create a video from my photos ... not sure if it was off the blog or what . . . and sent that to me without me asking for it... I guess to advertise a service I don't want.
I don't know how to get away from that.

Thank-you! Now I know where to come for a Drop-Box tutorial once I am back on my home computer. 238

Very helpful Anneliese. I so admire the knowledge you've gathered since coming online all those loooong years ago. LOL. You have gone in different directions than I have, and I do want to learn from it. I will give both Dropbox and Picasa another look.

I have been trying to get off the internet with *everything*, and looked at the Adobe photo shop app, but yes, you have to pay beyond the free trial. The semi-pros use it, and it would still be on the computer. Don't know for sure yet... .

I have also looked at blogger, and how you set everything up because I want to do a cookbook.

I understand MACs have a very good cookbook app, but I'm not on a Mac.

Sorry for the long comment. I thank you for your help. I would like even more similar posts from you!

Great tutorial!! I'm going to use this next time I have to send someone some pictures.

Just a little something from Judy said...

This is a great site! My sister shares all her pictures with me, via Dropbox. You gave such a helpful tutorial, and I appreciate that. I have found that Google is getting tighter in their system. When I send pictures via Google, the recipients cannot get them unless I sign on to give them permission to see them. But, now I am seriously thinking of switching to Dropbox. Thank you!
