The Hummingbird

Not long after I did my window planters I noticed a hummingbird hover by my kitchen window. I went for my camera, expecting it to be gone by the time I got back, but it seems it really liked my red begonias and the easy perch. With my camera in hand, from an adjacent angled window, I clicked at what seemed to be a blur of wings, when suddenly it surprised me with how still it could sit.

I read that their name comes from the fact that the flap of their wings is so fast, it makes a humming sound. What is incredible is how they can fly right, left, up, down and backwards, or just hover, like a motorized ball of feathers. Their feet are used for perching only. Because of the energy they spend, they can use up to twice their body weight in nectar. Truly they are tiny miracles in energy and endurance.

"But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you,. . .Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Job 12:7,9

Love these little guys! Looks like he's happy to have found your bright begonias. We have a butterfly bush at our kitchen window where I watch our hummingbirds get their fill of nectar. They're such amazing little creatures.

Beautiful! This is the green Anna's hummingbird. The males have a beautiful shiny purple red color around their neck. The other hummingbird you may see is the Rufous. They are an orangy color and the males have a beautiful shiny golden iridescent red color around their neck. These are the two hummingbirds in the Fraser Valley area. The Anna's stay all winter (I have a hummingbird feeder filled and they keep coming all year) and the Rufous migrate but come back every spring! What a great view from your kitchen window to enjoy! To have captured it on camera like that is so cool! Yes ...tiny miracles!

Anonymous, thank you for the information about the kind of hummingbird this is. I'll call her Anna and be on the lookout for her male friend. =)

Pretty...your little Anna! I'm trying to lure them over here...but haven't had too much success. They never stay for long.

Great photos! I enjoy watching hummingbirds, they come in all colors and sizes. We have been fortunate in our last three houses to have several hummingbirds visit consistently and even managed to snap photos of their nest a few summers ago. Thanks for sharing!
