My Brown Eyes

I was born in a country where blue eyes, such as my siblings', were noticed. I can still hear the Spanish expression of admiration. They were unique and special, while brown eyes were - well, just brown and normal! I remember looking in the mirror in my grandmother's apartment and saying to her, "Omi, I have beautiful blue eyes, right?" She would look at me with her large, sorrowful blue eyes and say, "No, you have brown eyes, Anni."

I think she was fine with my eyes, but when you keep hearing the comments in public, you come to believe that blue is better, and I literally kept track of people's eye color all of my growing up years, including when I met my blue eyed husband.

Today I look at my brown eyed grands, with so much else going for them, but I just love the fact that they have a tiny something that I can say is  from me! I love their brown eyes!

And one of them happens to be three years old today!
Jade, you make us laugh and love you to bits!
When you walk in the door with your "pack pack"
your whole being seems packed with joy and anticipation
and it's hard not to feel the same.

Aww, Happy Birtday, Jade! We all have blue/green eyes in our family. We were thrilled when Katie and Gabe had Sunny and Thunder with their beautiful big brown eyes!

Happy Birthday Sweet Jade! and I love your beautiful brown eyes little girl! I always thought brown eyes were so special because everyone in our family was blue-eyed! And now out of 9 grandchildren, only one has those great big beautiful brown eyes.

Hope your sweet brown-eyed girl had a lovely birthday! With a brown-eyed son-in-law, we thought we might have some brown-eyed grands but they all have blue eyes.

Isn't there an older girl who has brown eyes too, about seven years old?

What a lovely brown eyed grandmom and children. In fact I think brown eyes are rare. It seems everyone I know has hazel eyes.

You're right, Sharon! These two have an older sister with brown eyes. She was not around when we took the photo. There is one out of four, with her mother's blue eyes!
I was so fascinated with this subject when I was in high school that I did a science report on it. I found out how, when a blue eyed parent and a brown eyed parent (with blue recessive gene) can have kids with either color - however, blue eyes will always have a recessive blue -never brown. The brown eyed kids will have a recessive blue - but show up brown. So, the only way two brown eyed parents can have a blue eyed baby is if they both have a recessive blue. If the combination is brown/brown in either parent, the blue does not have a chance. It makes sense in my mind, but not sure I can explain it so well.

Did you come across heterochromia in your research? ;-) My Ben has 2 different colored eyes, one is green and the other is brown. He's always been just fine with it, thankfully. I too am fascinated with eye color. Thanks for the reminder about how the recessive and dominant genes work, it's been a while since I've learned that!
