Recently I was talking to mom's doctor about the surprise changes that came about last month. At the beginning of October she had a seizure and resulting set back, having us all think that her time to go had possibly come. The doctor put her on palliative care for about a week, with the care aides monitoring her closely for any positive changes. The changes came and they slowly were able to feed her again and get her up. Caring is what they do.
In the meantime, I feel so sorry for mom having to sit there day after day with no knowledge of what is going on. Her doctor said to me that obviously there is a reason for God still keeping her here. She noted that the staff sees our visits, our care for her and what we can bring into the equation is something we possibly do not realize. I wish so.
When I sit down to feed mom I will often quietly say a familiar German table grace with her. One that I know she knows but cannot say anymore. This will usually bring a smile of recognition from her. We do what we can to bring back a memory and to do what we know she would do. One resident, sitting across the table, said to me, "Can you do that to me too?" I asked her what she meant and she said something like, "tell me what you said to her." I told her that it was a prayer of thanks for the food.
Slowly I am realizing that mealtimes are a good time to interact with residents and care givers. Some of them still can carry a conversation while others just show a nostalgic kind of recognition at the mother / daughter bond. I laugh with the care aides about the antics going on, also noticing how patient they are. How can I make a difference? And then I realize how my mom is doing just that, a witness of the peace she has even in her silence. While other residents complain, don't eat, look miserable, play with their food and shout, she quietly eats every bite given to her. She goes through this hardship with such grace ... It's as though even unconsciously she lives and breathes the faith that has sustained her through life. It's amazing, humbling and something for me to grasp. God has a reason.

This is beautiful, Anneliese. Often we don't realize how living life in God's presence and in trust speaks to the world around us. Blessings on you and your sweet mom.
Oh, I love that your Mom still has a ministry (together with you) in her care home. Her ministry is her contentment and her thankful heart as she prays and eats. Blessings dear friend and fellow Mom-care-giver!
So beautifully written, Anneliese. I'm sure it's hard to see your Mom like this but it's good to see that she is still a blessing to you & you to her. I'm sure she appreciates everything you do for her.
Won't heaven be wonderful! Are you able to play music in her room on a personal CD player? Perhaps she would enjoy Christmas music too.
May God pour out His blessings on your amazing Mom & your family.

Thank you, Sharon ... She does have a CD player with favorite CDs from home in her room and she loves listening. The staff who know her well, turn it on when they put her to bed. I will check to see if she has some Christmas music.
Thrift stores are a great place to pick up CD's & Christmas music at this time. And Abbotsford has some of THE BEST thrift stores around. We love to visit them when we are in Abbotsford.
-Happy listening!

Your mom is beautiful, what an awesome photo of her. I'm so glad you posted about her as I've been wondering how she's doing. I appreciate the example of her life: showing that God can use us every day until He calls us home. Knowing that life can have purpose even when we're not able to "do" fills me with joy, optimism, and anticipation; as well as motivating me to keep living my faith and enjoying His Presence.
You paint a beautiful picture of your Mom and her ability to teach others about grace, love and patience. Thank you.

Beautiful Anneliese. May God continue to shine through your mom and through you as you live out these days with your dear mom.
Even in the midst of this sad situation, you have found something to be grateful for! God bless you and your family as you care for your dear mother and shine the light of Jesus' love in that place.
She is showing the caregivers grace in all things.
Thank you for sharing this touching post.
Love from NC
