The Grand Prix Day

I went downstairs to check on the grands and found them entertaining themselves
without too much trouble. The play area under the stairs is still a
favorite area.

Koen got intrigued by something that went zipping by.

Maybe it was this little vintage car . . .

Luckily he occupied himself with his tractor

and let Landon enjoy his find . . .

these little cars kept him going for a long time.

He found out that if he pulled them back and let them go . . .
they went crazy fast and opted for random wheelies as they went.

I wondered how long we've had them in the toy box . . .

It looks like McDonalds featured them in the 1980's . . . which makes sense.
They would do well to bring them back.

Someone in the right place . . . ought to take note.

Second Advent - Peace

Fear not, oh, Israel for there is peace still to come
Words to break the silence, a promise set to bloom
The promise to redeem us, one to free us
Break this silence in the violence in our lives

Emmanuel is sure to find us soon
The mighty rule to Jesse's star of truth
And bring us all to glory, tell His story
Heal the broken and restore them to His name

The star will guide us to the humble place
Where Christ the King reveals His earthly face
And we will see Emmanuel, God is with us.
God is for us, God is in us, we will see

We're singing Hallelujah
We're singing Hallelujah
Emmanuel, our God is with us

Composed and written by Michael W. Smith and son Ryan Smith

Although this video is taken from the Internet, it is one of the pieces I appreciated
hearing at the concert last week . . . beautiful music and words of promise, not only for the time of our Saviour's birth but for today as well. Emmanuel is probably one of my favorite names for Jesus . . . it means God with us . . . there is wonderful peace in that truth.

A Cookbook Review

One thing I have found in the few years I’ve blogged is that the world of wonderful bloggers is big. We all know that if we click on our friend’s sidebar, we will find a whole new list of interesting blogs . . . and if we click even on just one of them . . . we find another long, beautiful list . . . there is no end. I quickly realized that I simply can’t read all of the blogs I’d like to read.

Today, however, I want to highlight one such blogger . . . a friend of a friend!  Jane Bryan has recently published a cookbook by the same name as her blog, “Thy Hand Hath Provided” and I’d just like to tell you a little bit about it and how it’s different from other cookbooks.
First of all, I love the title and the fact that it acknowledges that all we have is from the hand of God. In paging through this book, I get the feeling that the fruit and vegetables listed in the ingredients have been carefully picked and frozen or canned while in season.

Favorite family and other adapted recipes, including breads, salads, appetizers, soups, sides, main courses and cakes are listed just like in any recipe book. What is unique, however, is that canned or frozen ingredients have a separate recipe on how to preserve that particular fruit of vegetable. For example, a recipe calling for pesto, will tell you how to make pesto . . . a recipe calling for applesauce will tell you what page to go to make applesauce . . . a recipe calling for canned pumpkin will refer you to a method on how to make and use butternut squash puree. Needless to say, a good portion of the book tells you how to can and freeze.
The index is great in that, if you have filled your freezer and pantry with home canned products or done purchases while in season, you can glean great ideas on how to use them.

One of the recipes we have enjoyed so far is the pesto torte. I made the layers of cream cheese and pestos in a loaf pan. After freezing it, you can slice it and serve it, showing off the colored layers. I like the idea of slicing it and freezing the slices so that you are ready with more than just one quick appetizer to pull out when needed.

The pumpkin bread turned out beautiful! I like the idea of wrapping it up, ready for a gift. Again, from one recipe I made three loaves, so it's worth mixing it up.
A few days ago, for supper we had the Malaysian Chicken Pizza. A lot of flavour gets packed into the ginger/peanut sauce made from scratch and it's oh-so easy!
And that's just a peek into a practical cookbook with lots more to see. To find out details you may visit Jane at  /http://www.thyhandhathprovided.com/
I wish I could send you off with a nice little something to nibble on, but this is the blogging room after all!

Blessings Shared

Quite some time ago, on separate occasions,
Lovella and I both purchased tickets for the Michael W. Smith concert.
Although we were not sitting together, she decided to make it a double date
by having us over for a bite to eat first. She said, all we are having is buns. Right.

Walking into their bungalow is always a welcome reprieve.
I've noticed that she loves switching things about,
bringing out a vintage apron, a handmade doily or other memento
from her special trunk . . . adding  fresh flowers and candles . . .
I love how her sentimental side comes through in a nostalgic way,
yet still timeless in beauty.

This day was no exception . . .
but more special as she had decorated her table for Christmas.
It was a treat just to see the care with which she had laid out the table
for a simple meal of buns, cold cuts, jam, cheese, pickles, veggies and some sweets.

Thank you, dear friend, for always allowing me to see more of who you are.
For it's what is in our hearts, that will spill over to others to inspire,
comfort or encourage.

The Pacific Mennonite Children's Choir

When Julene and Chris, with two babes in tow, moved to Indonesia and Kristal and Shaun set up their home in Phoenix with their little girl . . . any visions of grandchildren repeating life as it is here in the Fraser Valley could only be in my wildest dreams. One of these dreams is embedded in the rich musical heritage that this area is known for.

In recent years we have continued attending musical events and often, in my heart, I've wished we could still share them with our family . . . music having been such an integral part in their lives. One of the experiences I think back to is the years that our girls were involved is the Pacific Mennonite Children's Choir.

The choir was founded by Nancy Dyck in 1978.
This photo was taken in 1992 at the cabin (which we call the Lakehouse now).

It was the summer a choir from Winnipeg joined up with our choir
and one day we hosted them for a BBQ at the lake.

For a number of years the choir would take part in the May Fest activities in Leavenworth, WA

where there was never a dull moment of what to do.
Besides the many concerts in our surrounding area,
the choir also had the honor to perform at the Crystal Cathedral
and the biggest trip our girls were privileged to go on
was to a Music Festival in Seul, Korea.

Browsing through my photo album now, I saw a photo of them serenading
someone in the hospital and here they are performing at a business venue.
Our violinist girls had great opportunities to practice their skills.

So . . . all that to say . . . that sitting down at the PMCC dessert concert night
this past Friday was an emotional moment.

We sat at a table near the front with our Indonesia family, minus Tehya . . .
who was giddily waiting behind the scenes to come out with the choir.

And how they sang! Just like they always have!
The choir conductors are Sonja Hindmarsh and Carmen Hollett now.
Beautiful sisters, inspiring the next generation!

At one point the choristers got to stand in line off stage
and perform O Holy Night for us.
The one we were watching out for stood right close to our table
and continued sending smiles our way.

And the guest violinist . . . where did she learn to play like that?
Oh, what a precious evening!
My heart is full of thanks to God!

First Advent - HOPE

One of my favorite songs for the Season that I've shared before . . .
and I'll share it now again as it was so beautifully performed by musicians
Michael Berg (soloist) Carmen Hollet (piano) Julene Uganecz (violin)
Adam Smith (drums) and John Welsh (bass guitar)

Close you eyes and imagine being Mary when the angel announced to her that she would give birth to a son. Being a virgin, she had to believe the impossible, as she responded with, "I am the Lord's sevant. May it be to me as you have said." Luke 1:38
