Oh, and then there’s me . . . one of the first things I came up with was, “It would be so fun to have a little coffee shop back there!” Sometimes I’m still the little girl that likes to play house. I imagine an Italian back porch with a cute round table and serving homemade foccacia bread with balsamic vinegar and oil, or maybe a large warm cinnamon bun or crepes with coffee, or . . . Then reality sets in and I realize what the commitment of a coffee shop would mean. My guess is that I couldn’t just put up a “Closed” sign whenever I don’t feel like getting up early or whenever I want to go and visit my grandbabies, for that matter.
We have lived in this house for almost 22 years now. If only the walls could talk of the happiness that we’ve shared in this home! Morning breakfast as a family and three kids taking off to school just down the road. School activities and stressful science projects that involved the family . . . taking owl pellets apart, building miniature forts and studying for tests. If walls could speak they would remember the piano practices, from the first 'twinkles' to the sounds of arpeggios, scales and duets that followed. Off tune violin scratches that turned into beautiful concertos! And yes, we would be reminded of the drum practices in the basement! How could we count the laughter at birthday parties, the giggles at sleepovers and family nights playing hide and seek!
I remember coming home late at night from road trips, after having checked into different hotels along the way, and my H would teasingly say, “This is a nice hotel!” To which the kids would cry out, “No Daddy, it’s not a hotel!” It was as though they felt he was desecrating our home by those words.
There came the time to move some walls and move bedrooms to accommodate our growing kids. And believe it or not, I almost forgot the late night talks, and times we wondered when they’d come home. Did I really ever worry?
These days I must say that there is something about living in a house where our grandkids can play in the same playhouse that our kids enjoyed.

My patio continues to perplex me as to how to make it a wonderful space to relax with friends. . .it seems just when the weather warms enough to sit out late ..the flys find their way to the patio too.
Like you though, the memories that we built for the years at the farm when the boys were still at home. . can never be replaced.
Your patio will be wonderful what ever you decide to do .. I know that I'd stand in line .. .maybe do a call ahead to make sure there is a table available.
Ahh Anneliese..dreaming of summer projects is fun. We have a little cabin in the bush and added a screened porch last fall so are looking forward to sitting out there once the weather decides to warm up again. That screened porch was needed..too many mosquitoes and bugs.
I love this post...thank you for helping me walk thru the memories of "home".
PS. Thank you ALSO for the very lovely picture of me. LOL
Your home is everything warm and wonderful a home is meant to be!
I can say that I have memories in your house too and some of them on your back porch and in your {broken} hottub...
I think it is really cool that you planted some of the trees that now bring fruit and joy to your grandchildren!
this is a really nice post! :)
Anneliese, what a great post,,,you have so many great memories that you can cherish in your heart......... what a great post for your kids.
I think that I will have to keep my eyes open for seat sales so that when your patio is done I might be one of these people that are standing in line for that perfect cup of coffee and Cinnamon Bun.
Love your new front page.
last post was from me.....Alvina
Thank you so much for your post on my blog. I definitely need to get back at it. You have been inspiring me. I do feel a kindred spirit when I read your daughter's blog. You all just seem so wonderful. I am not sure if we have met but we have a number of friends in common from what I see. I see you are Bonnie's aunt. Her cousin Veronica is married to my husband's brother Steve if that all makes sense. Not sure if you are related to Veronica as well. This is getting long so I will stop playing the mennonite game. Your blog is so wonderful and inspiring. Keep it up and I will try and do the same.
Blessings,
Leana in Argentina
Oh my goodness, I want to be just like you when I grow up. We seriously have the same brain. I have always wanted to have a bed and breakfast or a coffee/lunch spot in our beautiful backyard! I loved this post so much! I love that you have been there for 22 years and I love your special realtionship with your H! I love reading your blog!!
Beautiful post, Mom. A wonderful and moving walk down memory lane ... Your home will always be "home" to me.
ooohh anneliese, i have such fond memories of your playhouse as a little girl. it was always a highlight for me when our family would come over to your house to visit. best little playhouse ever!!
Thanks for sharing those wonderful memories. You know, the 'kids' will never think of the house, rooms, yards or anything as different than those special places where they grew up. Right? And I often think too...oh my this back yard or this deck....I can't wait to redo it...but the teenager says oh mom....don't change a thing...these are my memories you are wanting to change.
Your shots of your grandkids are really quite something Anneliese. Wonderful! I was entranced. Your blog is simply wonderful to visit and I love your 'story telling'...it makes me feel like a walk down memory lane....as if we all belong. Love the quip about the 'hotel' when driving home with the kids. Cute.
wow, great post and great memories!
I loved your dreaming blog. I love dreaming and still dream of a coffee shop on my strip with some wonderful home baking....only on Saturdays.
Keep dreaming and see what comes of it. That's so much fun.
Great memories and photos that remind us what matters most.
