Part of Life - folding sheets

I don't know what thoughts went through my dear H as I handed him the camera and asked him to take pictures as I folded our bed sheet. I told him, "There are some people who don't know how to do this!" I guess he figured if I have this urge to show someone, he'd go along with my silliness. Now, if you really don't care if you have a rumpled mess of sheets to deal with, or what your linen closet looks like, that's okay and I won't look into it anyways. (Choosing your battles is a good thing) But if you ever do get frustrated with folding sheets, here is one way that I've found actually works and you can proudly stack your flat and fitted sheets neatly into you closet. Once you've done this a few times, it's actually very quick and you don't even have to think about it.

I hope these pictures help, because it really is harder to explain than to actually do it.

1. Take the long side of the sheet and put one hand into each of the two fitted corners
2. Take the corner in your right hand and flip it over the left hand, so that now you have two corners that are "cupped".
3. Put your right hand inside the cup and slide your left hand over to the left side, cupping those two corners as well. Now your sheet is folded in half. (picture # 3)
4. Repeat the right hand over the left hand, in order to cup the four corners. Put your right hand into the four tucked corners and slide your left hand over to straighten the fold. Now your sheet is quartered.
5. At this point you can lay it down and smooth it out, folding it over one or twice, depending on the finished size you want.
6. Now, you have a folded strip that you can fold in half once and then again.
7. Let me know how it works

Anneliese. . . ah .. we do that exactly the same. I showed Terry the pictures . .. not that he needs to know how to fold sheets. .but for him to know that he is not alone in the technical department of blogging. I love this post. . .there are surely many that will have an aha moment.
I did note that you have a long counter and that certainly does help.

So there is a way to fold those pesky sheets! I can't wait to try it out!
Yes you do have a very nice laundry area :)

Okay...well...I do do this Anneliese...so why do my sheets NEVER lay flat. Ah, I think it is all in the wrist work...grin!

Ooohhhhh.........now I see what I've been doing wrong....I've been getting the first few steps but then I'd lose it at picture #5 and #6 by not folding the side properly and not laying it down to smooth it out. Thanks for the enlightenment!

I've been trying to perfect this art while doing laundry at the hotel. Unfortunately I don't get as much practice as the girls who do laundry regularly, so my piles are never as pretty as theirs. But I do love folding flat sheets...they make super pretty piles!

ha ha, what a funny post! Luckily we only have ONE bedsheet here in China and it's on our bed 24/7 (unless we're washing it of course!).

I've always wondered how to fold a fitted sheet well though, so thanks. The pictures are a teeny bit too small to see it well though. Maybe you can give me a real-life lesson sometime??

Corinna, (not that I wouldn't give you a real life lesson, but . . .) if you click on the collage, it enlarges.

And this is one reason why I am glad to live in a country where to hire a maid is expected of a white woman!

Anneliese, I am a friend of Kristal's through blogging, and just came across your blog - i love it!
i love that you blogged about this - i only learned how to do this in the past year or so and has saved me from so much frustration on those fitted sheets! :)
PS. If you are interested in reading my private blog (because I am the type who likes to know who leaves me comments, so I assume other people do too), feel free to email me at oddsandens@gmail.com.

Annesliese, I'm Kelly Benita's mom. She sent me your link today, and I've been reading some of your blogs which I find very interesting and well written. I, too have a blog (private), but struggle with blogging because I just don't seem to get to it every day. Sounds like we have alot of common interests - we just redid our back yard, by the way - and are at much the same stage of life. Let me know if you'd like to read my blog, and I'll send you an invitation! Perhaps I should open it up and get into the blogging community full force!

Wow! You made it look so easy! I'm realizing that Ben must have watched you do this a million times, and that's why he had such a look of horror when he saw ME "fold" ours (first roll it into a big ball and then squish it flat) for the first time! I'm saving this post for next time. Thanks mom!

ANNELIESE....JUST THOUGHT I WOULD QUICLY PEEK IN AND SEE HOW YOU ARE DOING....WHAT A FUN POST AND I HAVE BEEN FOLDING SHEETS THIS WAY AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. I GUESS I DID LEARN SOMETHING FROM MY MOM....SMIRK.
THERE IS ANOTHER LITTLE TIP I HAVE FOR YOU THAT ELIMINATED THE FRISTRATION OF OUR KIDS GOING IN AND LOOKING FOR SOMETHING IN THE LINEN CLOSET.....
AFTER ALL THE SHEETS ARE FOLDED NEATLY, I TAKE THE MATCHING PILLOW CASE AND TUCK THEM INTO THERE SO THEY CAN FIND EVERYTHING ON ONE LITTLE PACKAGE. IT WORKS FOR OUR FAMILY, EVERYTHIN IN ONE PLACE.

I have to say that I've never seen this done before. I've got some sheets in the dryer right now and can't wait to try it out! Thanks for the tips!

Just stumbled onto your blog from the "Mennonitegirlscancook" blog, enjoying both!
