When it comes to mountain scenes, I am my father’s daughter. As a young girl, I lived in a city that, literally translated, means “I see a mountain.” My dad enjoyed telling me that. When we moved to Canada, he chose the West Coast, for no other reason, really, than the mountains. So, it just came naturally that I loved the mountains. And it just so happens that it was on a hike as a teen-ager that my, then future husband, first showed signs of being interested in me. He was eating on orange and stuck the peel in my back pocket. Interesting way to show that he had his eye on me, but it started something.

This past Saturday we got in the truck and headed east to try a new mountain. He showed me the peak from the highway, “The one on the very left . . . that’s Mt. Cheam.” he said.

It wasn’t long before we took the Exit, drove through the farming community and up, toward the mountains. We turned onto a forest service road and four wheeled for almost an hour on a rough road with many cross ditches and pot holes, passing kids who were having the greatest time on their dirt bikes and ATVs. This already felt like a workout!

By now the mountain top was looming quite close, I thought.

We began our walk with ease.

The wildflowers, the meadows, the clear blue sky …

. . . it was breathtaking! This is when I say, “I love hiking! There’s nothing I’d rather be doing!”

But the trail got steeper and the realization that the reward of seeing the top would not come easily, hit me in much the same way as the start of labor pain reminds you what it was like the last time. “Maybe the view is good enough already. If I take one more step, I’m going to die!” is sort of what went through my mind. Besides, it was very hot! My Gr 11 Geography teacher was wrong, the temperature was going up! We found a shady spot and had our lunch.

Somewhat revived, we continued . . . and then I saw it! The actual tip that we were headed toward. I don’t think I took a picture at this point, but can I just say it was not unlike the looming disappointment I felt with the realization that I may never make it!

The trail got very steep and finally I just sat down on the slippery shale, and told him he should go ahead - wave at the top – I’d take a picture!
I sat there for maybe five minutes, taking pictures of the mountain ranges and trying to convince myself that there really could not be much more to see than what I was seeing right where I was! Then I looked up and he wasn’t too far away . . . waving, no, beckoning for me to come! Suddenly I was strong, even with the backpack!

It was only a few minutes . . . and I would have missed this!! Who could have known what was on the other side of where I was sitting?

7,000 feet above sea level . . . it’s a speechless feeling!

We had dessert. (of course!) He ventured just a bit higher to the final peak, while I soaked in all I could of the mountaintop experience . . . the one I almost missed by four minutes!

Almost missed by four minutes! What a lesson to learn in life. Thank you for sharing your spectacular hike with us.
What a view!! Way to go - glad you made it to the top :)
Love, Bonnie
Anneliese. . .why didn't you call us? We are planning this one yet this fall as well. It is beautiful. You sound just like me, hiking really is the sport I love more than anything else . .even though I think I'm going to die on every one we go.
Your pictures are perfect. . .you went on a hot but gloriously clear day.
Maybe I'll just look at your pictures. Our son went up a few weeks ago and said. ..no mom . . this one is easy .. you'll have no problems. . He's said that a time or two and been dreadfully wrong.
wow, it's gorgeous! Way to make it all the way to the top!!!!
Way to go! I have climbed to that peek and felt the same exhaustion you did, but I too was glad for the encouragement I got to make it to the top. It is spectacular! Well worth the effort. Kathy
You picked the perfect weekend to hike Cheam...since it was lost it the haze most of the summer. Isn't it just the best feeling to know you made it right to the top? I haven't had that feeling for ten years...climbing Cheam was on our 'to do' list this summer...but it hasn't happened yet.
Wow!!! Way to go Girl! So glad you had a gorgeous day for it. Thanks for sharing your climb with us.
Great job! What a beautiful hike!!!
My hubby went there a few years ago and the pictures he took were breath-taking! One day I'll be fit enought to take on the challenge myself. I'm so glad you pressed on!
Way to go Anneliese. That's my favorite hike in all the world.
It is just one of those hikes that leaves you breathless.
You had a beautiful clear day..
While we were at Peak to Peak, you were at Cheam. How wonderful..
Words cannot explain how exhilarating that climb can be.
What a treat to see today! So many beautiful views!
My sister loves to hike, (Adirondack Mts. NY -5344 ft / 1629 m) but she rarely takes pictures ... I'll have to send this post along... 7,000' wow!
Thank you for taking us to the mountain top!

I love hiking too! Such a sense of accomplishment, and even better when you get a majestic reward at the end! I have a question for Julene, isn't this the mountain us girls hiked with you & Chris? The one that we sat too long enjoying the sunset going down on that view, taking pictures, soaking it in and... oh, yeah, the sunset!!! We ended hiking over half the way back in the pitch darkness, holding hands and freaking ourselves out! It looks like the view and the rocks we sat on for our photo... Oh, the crazy memories we've made!
Beautiful hike and spectacular view! Thanks for sharing the beauty of your day, Mom! I'm back on your world map ... do you see I'm in Aceh?
Oh, I loved that he beckoned you on, in encouragement and knowing you would want to reach the top with him. Nice post and I loved the pics!
How I remember those exact circumstances when we climbed Cheam many years ago. I was convinced I couldn't go another step when an 80 year old man passed us on his way down. Thinking that if he could do it - so could I, I got up and completed the climb to the top. It was worth it!! I'm not so sure I want to do it again but it does feel good to say I've done it once! Way to go Anneliese!
