Now, I don’t want this to come across in the wrong way . . .
I know that focusing on outside appearance is vain and all . . .
but I also know that what you wear can affect how you feel
for the whole day! I want to think of the outside as being
an expression of what's inside. I know that the more I’ve
come to accept who I am, the more content I feel about
my outward appearance.
The focus is not on making the outside beautiful so
that the inside feels good or accepted, but rather on
working from the inside out to reflect something beautiful.
So, the point of this post is to figure out how I try to avoid the “What do I wear?” scenario, and know that I have more than enough! I have found that it is very helpful to take the time to take inventory and lay out a number of options. Once I’ve taken inventory, it’s time to give away anything that I never wear, and add the two or three items that will multiply my options. By doing this I feel like some of my older things become new again. It may be as little as just adding a little sweater or a scarf.
So . . . I got a pair of new jeans, a cowl neck shirt and a pair of flat shoes for less than $100.00.
Then I went to my dresser and closet and pulled out one T-shirt, two older blouses, one shirt and two little sweaters for my “nine options” to wear with nice jeans. I could add just a skirt, and my options would multiply, but nine pictures is enough!
Then I shyly asked my H to be my personal photographer . . . his job description just expanded.
. . . and it was kind of fun . . . aside from the fact that he couldn’t take that smirk off his face. Maybe he knows something I don’t know . . . and he’s just waiting to let me find out from my blog friends . . . just how silly this is. Or maybe he was just happy to have some proof to pull out for me the next time I say, “I have nothing to wear.”

Very stylish and smart! Love all your looks and your hair is fabulous!
Love the jeans! Where are they from? And that cropped cardigan is so cute!
Anneliese. .I love this post. I need you to come to my house and help me figure it out. I love your style .. I bought a new pair of jeans and a pair of flats this fall too. It seems that sometimes I have a hard time knowing what to pull together. Other days. . it all seems to work. . .I have no idea why.
The jeans are really nice. .what kind are they?
I don't see this at all as a proud post but rather a sensible approach to shopping with common sense in mind.
Great informative post. I like how you "take inventory", then shop, then create your "9 looks". I also take inventory and give things away, however, I never really take the time to figure out all my options with what I have...something I should definitely do because my hubby often hears the words, "I have nothing to wear!"
BTW I also really like how you tied and added the scarf with the T-shirt. I have no idea how to tie scarfs nicely. I have a few, but never really know how to do the tying. Maybe this could be a topic for a future blog post... ;)
Love, Bonnie
I can see exactly why your H had the smirk...he was flirting with you...his adorable wife. First, your hair is so nice! I really enjoyed this post as I have been going through my cloths this fall and picked up afew scarves, one necklace, a pair of jeans and a sweater. This weekend i hope to add afew items too. Your new jeans fit you great, and I like your new top. I really like the satin blouse, the color is so nice. i would have never picked grey fro you, but you look SOOO good in grey. Your grey knit dress that you wore last year looked amazing on you. Keep it! You inspire me inside and out. Kathy
I agree with Anonymous 11:28; your hubby was loving his new job. You look awesome and hot for a grammy!!
Maybe I need to take lessons and learn from you. I love looking in the half sale racks, but somehow I always land up in the sports section and I did exactly that at Whistler once again and came home with sporting clothes all half sale....
It definitely feels good. And the colors are black and gray...I agree, you can pull things together by adding a scarf and away you go.
I know why H was laughing...my H would do the same.
Oh... everyone already said it :)
You look marvelous and inspire me to keep to my goal of losing 10 lbs. Everything looks better when health & beauty comes through from the inside-out!
Such great outfits Anneliese! I always think, after looking in the closet...I really need updating...
And you're right... a few new things can resurrect a closet of oldies!
I appreciate what you said here, I often get bogged down with what to wear to school... kids notice everything... even new socks ;o)
all the best, Maria
I love it!! All your new clothes look SO great!...and all so perfect for mixing and matching! I bet you have Dad convinced that you will never ever have to buy anything new again...little does he know.... :)
I have no idea what I'll be wearing this fall...definitely time to get in gear. I'll be thinking of you when if and when I go shopping...and wishing you could just pull it all together for me. You did good!
I love all the photos of you! Your fashion sense is beautiful!
My favorite photo of you is the one in the middle.. the colour/the lighting/ your expression is perfect!
You certainly don't look like a Grandmother!! Maybe that explains your hubby's smirk ??
You're beautiful inside and out! What a fun post, and I was cracking up thinking about your H snapping those pictures! Lovely selections of clothing, smart fashion sense, and very functional but stylish. Now, if only you had a new pair of earrings... :-)
Hello! I'm thinking about getting an email on my blog, but have to figure that out yet. So, for now I hope you don't mind me responding with my own comment!
Larissa - so good to know you're still there! I hope you're doing well. I got the jeans at Jacob Conexion ($40) They are very plain-don't have a fancy label. The little cardigan (cream) I got in the Spring at Suzy Shear ($20) I always round up. The black one I got at Smart Set maybe 5 years ago!
The shirt I'm wearing with it is a hand me down from one of my girls.
What else? The blouses are several years old - I think from Smart Set and Rickys. The scarf was sent from Indonesia (a hot country? - go figure.) A coupls of the necklaces I got for about $2 each at the cashier - where they have this random box of leftover jewelry. And the little Dexter flats are from Payless,I can't remember, about $25 on sale.
Nothing exciting, just a boring run-down.
Those of you whom I know -and commented - you all have a great sense of style, so that makes me writing about this kind of nervous . .. those I don't know-
I'm sure you do as well and I don't consider myself an expert at all. I enjoy learning from each other. Have a great day!
Oh, and the scarf post is coming...
YAY, looking forward to the scarf post :)
You are one stylish Grammy!
How fun!! Do you want come and do the same thing with my closet when I get back? I could use some help! and I agree with everything everyone else said...you are so cute!
Mom, I like how you explained how the outside adorning is making the inside beauty show. I think this is so true, but how often we get that mixed up! Or try to make ourselves outwardly beautiful with wrong motives. You look fabulous, Mom ... as always.
You look fab, and very clever at putting several looks together. It is such a smartie thing to do to take pictures of those outfits,as it is so easy to forget options when one is in hurry to get dressed.
At first glance I thought those pictures of you were Lovella. But you have cute dimples and she doesn't. Then I wondered if you two were related somehow, then realized that you are both Mennonite so the your family trees probably share a few branches along the way. As one Mennonite commented once, in print: "The branches of my family tree has so many overlaps, I am actually my own cousin, and can hold a family picnic just by eating a sandwich."
Well, good genes, like good jeans tend to make a girl look GREAT!
