We were watching Hawaii Five-O one night . . . the usual drama. In this episode a young lady in a travelling vehicle was locked up in a trunk and calling her brother from her cell. He told her to kick out the tail light . . . so she could see where she was going and tell him.
I asked, "Can you actually do that? . . . kick out the tail light?"
He figured, "Yes."
"That's a good thing to know." I replied in all seriousness.
He chuckled . . . like I would need to know this!
Well . . . you just never know. I thought it was worth knowing.

Yes Mom, I figure the chances of you being locked in a trunk are quite slim...
Just depends...I am frequently shocked that middle aged women are abducted from grocery store parking lots by kooks. I was a student at Oregon State University during the Ted Bundy abductions; he managed to get perfectly nice girls to assist him for a moment because his arm was in a sling. Then he abducted them and brutally killed them. After the abduction on my campus we women were asked to contact campus security to be escorted anywhere outside. It was horrible!
Abducted women rarely make it home alive. Because of this awful and too frequent occurance there have been many conversations about what I and my friends would do in a situation like that. Having once been threatened, I can report that every cell in one's brain and body freezes up at the moment it happens. It is really important to decide firmly in your mind and share with your loved ones that you will scream "FIRE!", claw and fight rather than submit, even if you are told to be quiet or you will get shot. The best chance to get away or get help is in the initial moments when the attacker's adrenaline is also rushing. Even if you do get shot, it is much better to happen in a public place than somewhere out in the woods or a hideaway.
I would never want to put my family through weeks or months or years of not knowing what happened to me.
We were watching that same episode and Dear interjected that in the newer models of cars these days they have a latch to open the trunk from the inside of the trunk. Something else that's good to know :o)
This made me laugh because I thought the same thing. Good to know, but what are the chances? But, Anneliese, you would also need to have your cell phone, fully charged, with you in order to call for help :)
Ha! Ha! now that's another problem . . . (note to self - charge the phone) you know me well! =)
actually, safety experts say that's the best thing to do! And not because you can see where you're going. Because you can stick a hand or foot out to attract attention OR cause the car to be pulled over by police for a burnt out tail light.
Charged cell phone . . . hmmmm . . . that might be a problem for me, too!
Yep, Fire is a great thing to yell because people always want to come see the fire. They don't want to get involved with seeing other things. So, yell fire, stomp, scream and fight. You want to be rescued before you have to kick out a tail light. And having a charged cell phone is a very good thing.
Going to charge mine right now!!!
Funny! I remember hearing that before. Like you said..."you never know"!! But I pray you will never have the opportunity to use that info!:-)
never say never.
Oh I smiled all the way through this . .post and comments.
I know that it is not a laughing matter at all. . .and actually quite a grave matter . .but I can just see and hear the interaction between A and her H.
Jill's comment was sobering. .and so sad and as always I did learn valuable info.
Wise to talk about these things with others!
