My Kitchen Treasure

When my H's mom had to move into assisted living, she wanted to observe the process of each child picking something they wanted of what she could not use any more.

What I wanted most, of all that she owned, was her kitchen machine . . . and I can hardly believe I got it! I took it home and stored it, giving my machine another few years to prove itself. This week I decided it was time to try Mom's. It's old .. but like new compared to mine. I can tell she opted for hand mixing more often than not.

I put in the butter and milk, the salt and yeast and flour. It hummed like a mercedes, as I mixed my first batch of Zwieback in it.

When the dough was finished, I tipped it into a larger bowl to allow room for the rise.

and when it had risen, I pinched off the little double decker buns ...

the ones Mom made countless thousands of, I'm sure.

And I baked them a little darker than I usually would ... more like she would have done them. Her girls and I decided that there was no way we would not have Zwieback at her Home Going Memorial Service.
Thank you, Mom, for a gift that will always remind me of you!

Beautiful pictures. It was nice of you to honor your MIL this way, by having her zwieback prepared her way. (Maybe all these years she has been wishing she could get hers out of the oven light, like yours!) Anyway, they are making me really hungry.

Anneliese..I got my Mom's Braun that is exactly like yours!! I love it and have used it all my married life (26 years) and it is still ticking!! I am soooo thankful for this machine in my kitchen and I love to continue cooking the recipes my Mom would loved to cook and bake!!

I'm loving my old Braun too...bought another one 'almost new' at a garage sale. It's my extra one in case mine should break down. My Braun has been kneading doughs for close to 40 years.
Those zweiback look wonderful, Anneliese! Your MIL would be pleased:)

That's really special, to be making Zwieback with her machine for the memorial, the way she would have made them! There's nothing like a good heavy-duty mixer for kneading dough.......I have a Bosch machine and love it.

I got one from Oma that she found at MCC for $10. The only thing is that the bowl doesn't always turn, especially when they dough inside is pretty tough, so I don't use it very often. But I want to!

Dear sweet memories ... so glad that you are contributing these to Oma's Memory Service ... She would be very, very happy and so proud of you, Mom.

Oh, I love this...John's Mother many years ago gave us each a Braun machine. I think I was the only girl in the family that used it till the Mercedes motor was shot..
I love those zwiebach and I love them just a bit browner.
Your mom will be honored and delighted to know that you hear her heart and give dignity to this special occasion.

Why am I hungry for Zwieback right about now? I'll be thinking of you all this afternoon...as you remember your mom...and eat her favorite buns.

So glad you got her mixer!

I liked my Braun better than the KitchenAid I have now. It seemed to mix better. What a Lovely tribute to your MIL - she is smiling I'm sure as she understood about blessing others by baking for them.
