September Prayer

There is something about September that has a hint of the same feeling as January. With long summer days coming to an end, most of us get back into some kind of classes or schedules that begin fresh in September.
New beginnings often cause me to reflect, this time maybe more-so as I see a change in the school cycle that’s been kind of lost to us with our oldest grandchildren being home-schooled in far off Indonesia. That was until just recently.
This week our barefoot-running grandchildren began classes in a one-room schoolhouse, taught by a teacher from North America. And then, to bring it closer, we have an excited five-year-old, who just became a Canadian citizen, starting Kindergarten right here! Who would have thought that we’d have this pleasure?

It’s not only my grandchildren who are entering a new stage in life. I also want to keep learning . . . these days being convicted about the area of prayer.
On one of my flights, this summer, I was reading a short devotional on the importance and the power of prayer. So often I wait to pray until I am desperate about something and end up taking many things for granted. I wonder, how different my life could be if I truly took God up on His promise to answer prayers. How would things be if I did not wait until prayer is all I have left?  As a grandmother now, I want to pray  about my dreams . . . and practice the one thing that will eventually outlast me.

The writer pointed out how Abraham, when he learned that Sodom would be destroyed, “remained standing before the Lord” … he did not give up asking God to save his nephew until he had that confirmation from the Lord.

Jesus prayed. He prayed early in the morning. He prayed in the garden and He climbed a mountain to pray, He taught his disciples to pray. If Jesus needed to pray, how much more do I? The significance of prayer is emphasized by the fact that He did not call the temple a house of music, fellowship or teaching … but a house of prayer. He said, “When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my father in heaven goes into action.” Matthew 18:19
Prayer causes us to have to humble ourselves and admit that we need God and when God sees a humble and contrite heart, He hears. When we draw near to Him, He draws near to us because He made us for relationship.

There is so much more… but I’ll leave it for now and just pray . . . pray first.

When considering prayer I've always been struck by Jesus' example and the fact that as God he prayed. Sounds like there is a congruent message going out for believers to pray. I'm also so grateful the Jesus is praying for us...amazing thought. Wonderful encouragement on prayer Anneliese...

This is truly in my heart as well. Jesus prayed, and Him being the Son of God, therefore we need and want to be so close to God that we hear His heart beat! I love talking to God, and not just talking, but listening to Him. I love this post! Thank you Anneliese!

Anneliese, thank you for this inspiring post. I see more each day that the best thing I can do for our grandchildren is to bathe them in prayer.

What a perfect post...combine that with that photo that I shared earlier and one can see how we need to continuously come before God in prayer.
This is a wonderful season as we see the harvest being reaped.

Thank you Anneliese for this wonderful post. I feel the whole world is thinking about or actually praying this weekend - remembering the horror of 9/11. I too must practice prayer much more often and I must believe that prayers are answered - even though it is sometimes hard to see any answers. Thanks so much for this humbling inspiration!

Thank you, Mom, for this timely post. What a gift it is to pray ... I would feel awful lonely here if I couldn't.

I, too, sense the need for and the importance of prayer in my life. I'm learning what it means to be in an attitude of prayer as I go about my day. I believe that attitude is how we "pray without ceasing." I have much to learn, and He is so willing to teach me! How amazing to realize that the same God who created the world and keeps it going, the God of miracles and wonders, delights in hearing my feeble prayers!

Hi Anneliese,
Prayer is an amazing thing, to be able to talk to God is such an awesome privilege. I have been growing my prayer life more this year, and committing things into his hands. It is such a beautiful thing to spend a day at the beach praying, enjoying spending time with him in his creation.
Thank-you for your comment about summer savoury. I haven't seen it here in Australia (Brisbane), but will be on the watch for it now :-)
Have a lovely day,
Selina.

Good post and encouragement, Anneliese. I have been wanting to schedule my morning time differently so as to allow for more prayer time. Just this morning I read another blog about prayer; you might like it:

Thank you for such an inspiring post. Why do we wait to pray when just a few sincerely uttered words can make such a difference?
