Verses from Psalm 90

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.
before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Teach us to number out days aright
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.

Driving in the car, yesterday, I was listening to Laura Story's song called Blessings . . . a second voice, that of a nine-year-old, was singing along and filling the car with raspy, sweet innocence. Did she know what the words meant? She sang like she did...

". . . what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?"

Sleepless nights. I don't think she knows of them yet, but maybe . . .  just maybe . . . one day she will. And she will know that in those times God is the Only One listening and waiting. Some of our greatest blessings do come from trials we would not have chosen, because they have caused us to call out to Him and feel Him near.

This song has special meaning to me. A friend of ours battled breast cancer for nearly 5 years. Towards the end of her battle, she wrote about this song on her blog and how much the words meant to her. The song will forever remind me of Andrea and her fight up to the very end. Such a great song.

I think I got that CD for Mother's Day. That's so sweet that your little 9 year old sang along...

I have often listened to the words of that song and had to agree that blessings do come when we don't expect it.

I love how you think!

your sweet Daughter in law Kari is a friend of mine and introduced me to your blog last year. I check it daily to see your posts, but this is the first time I have commented. This post today has come at the right time, with the words I needed to be reminded of. My brother's MIL was just diagnosed with a brain tumour, and you question, and struggle with all the why's. Reading these verses, and words of this song where such a great reminder that God is in control - and that he blesses us through all sorts of situations that we wouldn't choose for ourselves. Thank you for this post! I have sent the link to my Sister in law.

Marlene, thank you so much for commenting this time. Although I am not personalyy going through a difficulty right now, I felt such an urge to post a spiritual encouragement of some sort. I know, I have had trials that I would not have chosen, but God has renewed and strengthened me through them, hopefully to better understand those going through a hardship and hopefully still learning to trust His heart, when I can't understand his hand.
May God hold you all and give you a peace that passes understanding.
