I was pushing the boys on the
swings under the maple tree in our back yard,
when I looked up and thought back
to the day it was planted . . .
about twenty-five years ago.
If trees could talk!
The sapling
that it was, I probably could have enfolded it’s trunk with one hand.
I
remember getting a funny look from the gardener
when I cautioned him not to go
too close to the wash line.
Do you see it there? The top of the pole just shows
up at the bottom of the photo.
had someone told me that my grandchildren
would be swinging from that
tree one day.
Eight of them!
This week we are back to feeling
like parents
as three of them have been entrusted to our care.
The days begin
earlier than usual.
By the time I have them dressed, fed and buckled into their car seats
I feel like I have surely earned some kind of an award!
Natalie gets dropped off
in front of her Grade one class
and the boys come back home with me.
I've had to smile at how two boys energize each other.
The greatest discovery has been the fact that
they can use the garage as a hockey rink..
They change their names to reflect
two other brothers on their favourite team
and off they go!
Another thing that caught me by
surprise was how an old baby toy
suddenly became a sword and shield! Who would
have known?
And as for the favoured highway
for little vehicles . . .
I’ve come to convince myself that those fine lines on
the black coffee table
look quite okay on there. It’s the look . . .
not unlike the smile lines on a Grammy's face.
not unlike the smile lines on a Grammy's face.
By the time the sun sets, I feel like an old tree that is more used to days in the
shade . . . than the young sapling mom I used to be.
The best time of the day is when I get to dig into the warm water
in the kitchen sink . . .
and Papa takes them all outside to run off some steam
before baths and bedtime
stories.

Looks like they are having a great time! I had to laugh at your comment about how 2 boys can really energize each other...the story of my life right now! LOL
Loved your sapling analogy. So fitting.
what a blessing it is for S&K that they have the loving support to be able to leave their kids in such capable and loving hands while they're away. i'm looking forward to this next year and makes me think how much of a treasure it is to have parents who are willing to do this, who love our kids enough to exhaust themselves for a week or 10 days, and how that will allow us to build our marriage by being able to go away.
may you be blessed as you bless your kids and grandkids!
Oh the energy level and activity level of this age group. Hope you find sleep easy when your head finally hits the pillow!
I too love the sapling analogy of this delightful post! You have a most wonderful way with words. I love the view out your kitchen window while you do the dishes!
Shaun and I had to chuckle at this!
Yes, thanks for blessing us so much by doing this for us!! xoxo...having a FABULOUS time! Mahalo! :)
I totally understand this post. I understand how the days start earlier when they are staying over and the way I feel like I should earn an award when I am through with the day. I like how you tied this with the sapling analogy. What a sweet way to look at it all.
I know they are having a ball and you are tired!! But it is a sweet tired that fills your heart with joy! So glad you have this opportunity...and that they do, too!
I love the way you see the blessings and sweetness in the moments of the day. I love hearing Kelly encourage you that what you are doing is worth so much.
Bless you!
We're doing weekend duty for a 21-month old while her parents are in Europe for a few weeks. Wow, the energy expended is incredible - both by her and by me!
I love the fact that you enjoy the time doing dishes while hubby takes the kids off to play. I always felt that was such a gift from my husband who did the same thing.
I hear you, Anneliese. So much fun...so exhausting...so rewarding...and such good memories for all. Enjoy the rest of your week with your precious grands!
Beautifully written....... I love the part where you say you've convinced yourself that "those fine lines on the black coffee table look quite okay", and then compared it with the smile lines on Grammy's face. Thoughtful insights like that are what make your reflections such a pleasure to read!
Wonderful analogies in your post today. I love the way your write and get right to the heart.
