Thirty Years Ago!

To be honest . . . I was afraid of
"slugs and snails and puppy dog" tales -
images unbeknown to a mother of girls.
But all skepticism diminished when I beheld
pure innocence squinting at me
with a dimple that stole my heart.

Your brown eyes filled with admiration
for things with wheels,
balls that went far,
sticks that could be handled
and tools that made holes.
It made me see life from another perspective
and, oh how, I loved because you did!

Teachers said, “He's not like the girls!”
I agreed, but that was okay.
I knew in my heart, what I saw . . .
honesty, hard work, compassion.
The rest would fall into place.
What more could I ask?

You grew tall, your legs strong.
My years of French braiding,
perfect reports,
music and acting stages were exchanged
for carpooling boys with bleached hair.
Gym bags, slam dunks, spikes, serves and stats -
they became the highlights of the week.

Now people may think
I never knew about the pallet bonfires,
cookie sheet sleds or couches pulled behind vans.
The old Volvo drove into the garage - running hot.
But you came home. You made good choices.
I saw the heart of a sensitive young man.

As the story goes, at just the right time,
you met a gorgeous young lady and
you pledged your love for better, for worse.
She became our daughter,
loving her children and husband
in the way it was meant to be.

Dear Ben, on this your special day, we look back
and give thanks for all you've been
and for all you have become!
You are a man of wisdom and strength.
The sparkle in your eyes, still there,
giving encouragement and joy to those around.

Happy Birthday!

So proud of you!

Does not every son wish for such a kind and grace filled tribute? You both raised him well. What a blessing our children are!

I wish him many more birthdays to celebrate with you all.

Ohhhh I love seeing pictures of little boy benjie!! He is so easy to love!! Plus, as an infant he is identical to how Lacey looked, it's so crazy! Thank you for everything you wrote, all true things written so beautifully, made me all teary! Although i snapped out of it quickly when Lacey studied these pictures and kept saying things like "me no like Mimi like that!!" And rubbing her upper lip saying "papa yuck," can't quite handle the 80's I guess!

Wonderful post!! And to think that I first met you in the hospital when you had Ben...can't remember which gal I was visiting and you were there.

Anneliese, it is so wonderful to look back with you and remember when Ben was born. One of my earliest memories of him was when we called our dog Benjie and you took some motherly exception to a dog being called that. =) I'm so glad you added a son to your family! I love how you love your son.
My favorite part of this post is reading Lacey's comments on Mimi and Papa. Oh so sweet to hear her thoughts.
Happy birthday to Ben!

It's a wonderful thing to see your children become even more than we imagined, and to be able to say that we admire the person they've become. Your pride in this handsome young man shines through your writing!

What a beautifully written post... I can only imagine how fast time flies (now that I have my own children I am getting a taste of it!) I cant believe we are 30!!! Those days of pulling couches behind that volvo are long gone :) I think we lit the couch on fire too ;)
