A Summer Evening by the Ocean

A 40 minute drive from home brings us into the whimsical seaside community of White Rock,
the perfect place for a summer evening date . . . whether it be a walk along Marine Drive to poke into the little touristy shops or out on the pier with ice cream in hand.

One night, because it was a special night, we had supper on the rooftop patio of the Boathouse
and I so enjoyed my crispy shrimp tacos with jalapeno and mango salsa!
Made me want to take everyone I love to come taste and see . . .
but being with the one I love the most was most perfect.

The view from our table included the pier

paddle surfers . . . and a sailboat here and there

a passenger train going by . . . and a little later a freight train loaded with coal

We considered picking up ice cream, but did not want to leave our glorious setting too soon
so we enjoyed our apple cranberry crisp with coffee . . . asking for extra ice cream after the pretty presentation was photographed. We were sharing, after all!

Finally making our way down to the rail tracks

and onto the promenade . . .

we passed an accordion player
and later some young gals, trying their country tunes on the audience walking by.
I zoomed in on the flower baskets adorning the street up top.

We passed the pier on the right . . .

the water lapping at gnarled tree trunks and rocks

and seagulls who were not afraid of us.

Just a perfect calm summer night along the walkway.

A time to shed all cares and just enjoy the evening light of a fading day,
while holding onto promises of more to come.

I love the ocean but it takes us about 4-5 hours to get to it from our home. We are going to be there for a week in September though -- can't wait!! What a lovely place to share a meal and a walk. I'm curious -- what was on top of the ice cream?

Jo-Ann ... it was a little orange tomatillo. Not sure as to how that goes with ice cream, but I guess it depends on if you think of it as a fruit or a vegetable.

Hi Anneliese
We met briefly at your book signing at McNally in Saskatoon. I'm really enjoying the new book! We're visiting the Richmond area from Saskatoon this week, and after I read your post we headed to White Rock to experience it for ourselves. We went to The Boathouse and had the shrimp tacos and they didn't disappoint. We enjoyed the beautiful view and the absence of mosquitoes made it perfect! Thanks for the recommendation!

Hello Cheryl,
Not sure if you'll check back, but thank you for stopping by and telling me. I'm glad you could visit Whiterock on another beautiful night and enjoy dinner there. So neat to connect with you in a round-a-bout way!
