Do you have a bench story?
I was about five years old when, one day, I stretched out on my grandmother's bench
and found out the length fit me from head to toe.
How amazing was that?
For some time after that I was known to try to impress others
by telling them, "Ich bin so gross wie Oma Ihre Bank!"
(I'm as big as Oma's bench!)

This photo, taken by Beatriz Photography for the Celebrations cookbook,
shows a beautifully set table with a bench.
The bench was made by my father-in-law,
the kind of bench he would have made to flank their family kitchen table -
a table around which many a simple meal was shared.
To me a bench says,
"We can make room . . . you are welcome!"
To be honest, my heart is not always as big as Oma's bench -
it does not stretch unending -
but I'm thankful for family and friends who understand
and to God who knows just how to meet me where I'm at.
His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men,
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
He giveth and giveth and giveth again.
(verse from hymn - He Giveth Grace, by Annie J. Flint)

Your heart is bigger than oma's bench. Actions always speak louder than words.
Monika
Your heart is plenty big - I can tell by the blessings in your life! Benches say "welcome" to me too...
Even when the heart is big enough one needs a bit of respite so that it can keep stretching. I hope you are taking care of yourself!
Love this. We grew up with benches, too. I'm sure God will take care of all your heart needs...
You have a lovely way with words..a nice analogy!
You have a soft and flexible heart...that is just the right size! Like the benches whereof you speak..your heart always seems to make room for more. I will always be reminded of your analogy when I see a bench from now on.
Your thoughts are beautifully expressed. Special post and photo.
God does always have more grace doesn't he? I love that story and I agree with Monika that you have such a big heart and one that is so tender.
I never thought of a bench story before. That is so cute. It reminds me of our time at Manning Park last week where our youngest grandson lay down on the bench and closed his eye. Actually my father always insisted on a padded bench in our family home. It was a nook bench, so that he could have a quick shut eye right after a meal. Interesting!
I,m level like you...my grandmother had a huge heart...it reached out to everyone.
Oh Anneliese - I love this story and the way you've related it to one's heart! We always had a "bonk" behind the kitchen table which held 4-5 of us 8 kids! The great thing I remember is that we all sat together for lunch and supper....each one having his and hers designated spots! In later years the grandchildren sat on that very bench - all in a row just like we did. Oh, the memories of amazing meals and family times and speaking German around the table as my father always insisted! Even though I don't know you well I can tell that you have a very big and tender "hartz"!
From my visits here, I have come to believe that your heart is bigger than any bench!
My heart was touched by the words of Annie Flint. How comforting and reassuring. Beautiful picture!
Love those words from the hymn...such a great reminder!
I've been away from a computer for quite a few days and it fed my soul to read and catch up on several of your postings. Thanks for sharing moments in your life that we can enjoy, learn from and be inspired in our own journeys of faith. God is good. Love Gloria
