As our kids were growing up, birthdays were always celebrated first thing in the morning
with breakfast . . . and gift opening, of course.
This past weekend, with Julene's birthday falling on a Saturday, we decided to
make this kind of a birthday morning a gift for her by packing our overnight bags and
heading to the Lakehouse on Friday already.
The grands debated on sleeping arrangements for a while
and once they made their decision they piled on one bed and got their story in.
Papa always has something to tell them about when he was a boy in Paraguay . . .
like a story about a snake or meeting up with an Indian who chased him.
And then they are supposed to go to sleep.
After a few checks at their doors . . . with a lot of shushes
and drinks of water and a
"mom, can I flush the toilet?" yelled down to where we were sitting
(because the question is not as loud as the flush) . . .
the adults got tired enough to get themselves up to bed as well.
The lake is always most beautiful in the morning. Here the view out of the bedroom window is partly hidden by a huge walnut tree.
From the kitchen door, I enjoyed the scene of the kids all wanting to help make a fire. . .
just because.
Just how she loved it . . . reminiscent of old times . . .
breakfast and gifts first thing in the morning.
I imagine this weekend being even more than my dad could have dreamed of when . . .
thirty five years ago . . . on the weekend of his first granddaughter's birth,
he purchased this piece of property
with visions of changing the horse barn into a home for future family get-a-ways.
He loved this spot . . . as do all those who never got to know him.
Thank you, Dad!

What a lovely setting for a special girl's birthday! I bet this is just what your dad hoped for when he purchased this property many years ago...
What great foresight! Such a wonderful place for the family to gather...
Your dad did something very special when he bought this property. It is certainly a gift to the generations that gather there.
What a special birthday at a very special place. What is the special breakfast? I see a waffle and at first I thought it had catsup on it (perhaps an egg on the waffle) but then again maybe it's jam! (: Just curious! The fruit looks so yummy and of course I recognize bacon.
Jo-Ann, the favorite mentioned is waffles with vanilla custard and raspberry syrup. Here is the recipe

Oh yum! Those waffles are so delicious. Looks like a great time!
The lakehouse is beautiful and what a great idea to celebrate first thing in the morning with breakfast! Did you also have birthday cake later in the day?
Anneliese... I love how your Dad 'gave' something to his family that allows you all to continue to experience his love in a very physically present way !
I love it .. and I love how it is a memory building centre in your family!
A treasure you have indeed !
This was such a gift for me to enjoy time with those so dear to me! We missed you, Ben & Kari & girls! Dad & Mom, thank you for spoiling me!
This is such a nice family tradition to celebrate birthdays!! Your dear father had such incredible foresight when he purchased this property and you are all making his dreams come true. Happy birthday to a beautiful young lady!
What a privilege it is to step inside your family's special happening for a few minutes. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful place, your dad's insights in his life, and the lovely daughter you were celebrating. The picture of your husband telling his bedtime stories, is a familiar one in our home too. That is a priceless picture!
Happy Birthday to Julene! I am sure she thanks God often that she was born in such a loving home.
That truly is a gift that your dad gave to share his legacy in life.
i love the early morning breakfast traditions. It was always a delight to wake up earlier and decorate the table with their favorite food and it looked so pretty with the gifts piled around.
Now I am hungry for waffles.
