The Chaco in Paraguay

Visiting my H's home introduced our kids to a whole different landscape and way of life.

But they were tough.
New foods, crowded quarters, a strange language and blasted with mosquito bites . . .
we hardly heard them complain.

Their eyes saw adventure and fun.

I still marvel at how they played  in the dirt with their second cousins . . . seems a common language was not needed when making mud pies or playing hide and seek.

We visited my H's home but no one was there to open the door for us.
He was surprised how small it had become.

Clay ovens were not in use any more, but left as a reminder of our parent's pioneering days.

One of the cousins we visited had a peanut farm and here they are ready to send off a shipment.

Most homes were surrounded by verandas to keep out the blazing sun and provide a cool place to visit. It really was an experience of a lifetime and may partly explain why our kids have the travel bug in them. We blame ourselves . . . with a smile, of course.

Hola Anneliese, que emoción, leer el nombre de mi madre!!!!!, doblemente emocionada por saber que tienes los valores religiosos. Yo vivo en Buenos Aires, pero me dan mucha pena los niños en el Chaco.
Un placer saludarte.

This post brought back so many memories. Our home in Ecuador had a wide porch/veranda where we would sit and talk. Those clay ovens bake the best bread. How wonderful that your children were able to visit their parents' birthland.

I think these kinds of holidays build the best family memories....as they hold memories that are pasted on to the next generation and open our eyes to where and how others live. Loved the old photos....God has been good to your families over the years and will continue to be with you all:)

It must have been so interesting for you to go back there and visit! Your children will always remember this and can now show their children where and how great grandparents lived. Such a great legacy to pass on...

Definitely an experience of a lifetime! How nice that you were able to take your children to the land of their 'forefathers' for an 'up close and personal' visit.

I will alway remember and be thankful for the time I got to spend with Oma in Paraguay, visiting family and towns, and especially the house she grew up in! I love being familiar with those roots of mine.
