Then Jesus said to His disciples,
"Therefore, I tell you (I had to check to see what the therefore was there for)
Do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear.
Life is more than food and the body more than clothes . . .
Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin.
Yet I tell you not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today
and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,
how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!"
Luke 12: 22- 28
Suddenly, as I'm reading these verses in context, I'm thinking there is more to these verses than just a lighthearted suggestion that we need not worry. Jesus has just finished telling them the parable of the rich fool who thinks he can selfishly plan for his success and enjoy a life of leisure. And when I continue reading after these verses, I see how Jesus comes around to putting it all together by telling us not to worry about this life but to learn how to lay up treasure in heaven by how we live today. If our treasure is in heaven, our lives will show it by setting aside self seeking ambitions or things that entangle us. Eternal treasures can't be taken away or lost.
