So, first off, we talk about leggings and tights. What is the difference? Depending on where you live, and context, you may interchange them but, just for understanding here, I'll refer to tights as thick to semi sheer pantyhose (with feet) that come in a variety of colors, and leggings as to being of thicker material, cropped below the knee or ankle, most often black.
So, where you get dressed, do you have a full length mirror? We all know that it's probably a good idea to check things out as we get dressed or before we leave the house. So what do you look for?
One of the things I look at is, what is the the first thing that hits me about what I am wearing?

Do the legs stand out unnaturally?
Try to balance the look by coordinating with the top (a necklace, scarf or sweater) or match a sweater and a pair of tights to pick up a tone/color in the skirt.

Does the outfit look frumpy/not right with the hose and boots?
Try boots according to the length of the dress. If the dress or skirt is on the shorter side try leggings or tights with boots to the knee. If the dress or skirt is longer, try tights (can be on the sheer side for formal occasions) with low boots.
Another thing I look at in the mirror is to see what aspect I would like to camouflage.

This knit dress ended up getting too tight and awkward looking with tights. ( I wonder what happened?) I crunched it up with a belt and changed to jeans ( leggings work too) to make it look like a comfy sweater. Bulges in general can be camouflaged with layering as well, The first layer can be a tight cami or loose blouse and the second layer a loose sweater. This adds interest and keeps attention away from those love handles.

For my age leggings do not necessarily replace pants. They are great for exercising or around the house but for going out I prefer to wear them with a sweater dress, or dress that is too short without them.
This season calls for a few essentials that make a difference in your wardrobe as a whole. Depending on your style, a classy coat and/or warm jacket that goes with everything, tights and/or leggings that work with your wardrobe and a comfortable pair of boots and/or booties that you just love, will round out the necessities for getting out. If you have these taken care of, other things will fall into place.

Ooops that's me.

I love this Anneliese!! I really need to clean out some of my drawers too and rework my wardrobe! I love wearing leggings with skirts and dresses and you have done them so well! Now if I could just shed a few of those extra lbs. - everything would fit better lol!
Oh I always love your wardrobe posts. You are so darling in whatever you wear...I like that you showed the not best look...and the best look. Your style is so cute on you...suiting you perfectly:)
I love this! Just wish I had your eye for putting things together! :-)
It always thrills me to see your fashion posts, Anneliese. You have a wonderful sense of style and I find it so helpful to read your tips. They open my eyes to new ways of thinking when I go shopping or pick out my clothes for the day.
With the colder weather coming I wonder if you might consider an in-depth post on winter clothing and pulling it all together? Just a thought. Either way, I thank you for sharing this with us today.
Funny thing, even your "stark" and your "frumpy" looks good on you! I think all of us like your "wardrobe tweaking" posts, especially when you inspire us to organize our drawers, along with the fashion tips. Your honesty is refreshing, and somehow, you model beautifully while holding a camera.
That was fun...and motivational!
Anneliese what is your watch? I notice it has big numbers. :) I may be shopping for one soon, as I need a SECOND HAND for my exercise program.
Sharon
Sharon, my watch is a Timex indiglo
with a bigger face and second hand, but the numbers are just lines.. . although I'm sure you can get it with numbers. I like the indiglo at night when I can't read the clock without my contacts in. =)
Leggings are never pants.. At any age past 10.
Unless of course one is on the way to the gym!
That would be perfect for middle of the night *and* timing my heart rate activity.
I want big but something also classic. This will be just right.
Thanks Anneliese.
Sharon
P.S. I know my question may seen naive, but in fact, I've never owned or worn a watch. I can tell within a few minutes what time it is, by the light. It's that second hand I'm after. :)
I'll second the commentator who said they like your fashion posts. You do them so well and the information is always good. Thanks!
I'm so glad I kept reading backwards from where I left off when I went on vacation. Your fashion tutorials are always so great.
I also like the pictures of what is good and what looks better.
