House for Sale

The for sale sign beckoned you to look
at this family home
obviously cared for over the years.
Curb appeal was good,
you'd never guess why the sign was put up.
Treading respectfully in rooms,
with evidence of stored up memories,
one could not help but notice
a long time ago cupboards were painted fresh
cute family mottoes were hung on walls
with photos of happy times.

But on this day the signs of this family life
to a certain observer
somehow faded into a new reality,
seeing what was left untouched.
Maybe it was more of a feeling,
a sense of  emptiness and neglect
as tough the spirit had given up.
The heart of the home was gone.
The house might be for sale and be redeemed
but the broken up family
what will their future hold?

How does one decide the "better"
when the "worse" has come about?
The question touched a spot way deep within
from a memory of long ago.
The years will go by,
the children may grab the memories
or maybe they won't.
Life will have its twists and turns with
new opportunities and new resolutions, but
the question that lingers wonders about the price
that was paid to sell this home.

What a thoughtful commentary. I think I know what your eluding to, and today I am feeling the same way about my daughter's school friend and her family. Come the new year their lives will change and yet somehow I don't think they realize how ours will too. Thank you for writing this today.

Very evocative. Makes me think of some situations I've known. Giving up is a choice with consequences.

Very poignant, Anneliese. If only walls could talk is what I often think when touring an empty house. There is always a reason for leaving a place and we can only hope that good memories will live longer than the tough ones.

I have driven past homes with this malady. I have cried tears with those who left houses like this. You shared it well, especially when words are hard to come by. Life goes on doesn't it, and like Bev K said, "hopefully the good memories will linger." Thank you for so thoughtfully sharing your heart in this post.

Such a sad reason to sell a home. I heard a lady in front of me paying for her groceries telling the cashier a similar story about her son and daughter in law. She was spilling her story out of pain to someone who would listen and feel bad ... for the home that was sold in a big hurry because love no longer lived there.
