A Visit with the Woodpecker

I show this photo for some perspective on the size of the tree in the back of the yard.
The roof line is the neighbor's house behind us.
I was at my kitchen window when I saw the bird pecking away and decided to go for a visit.

He was soon aware that I was there and started playing a game of hide and seek with me.
As I moved closer he inched further around the tree while I followed.

He moved behind, peeking around the corner so I could just see his head. I did not take a photo.

Step by step he wound around the tree

until he came around the other side.

His dark, white speckled coat turned navy blue in certain lighting.

After some time he seemed to realize that I meant no harm as he
came right into the open and just sat there.

Yup . .. he checked to see if I was still there and
then he continued the show like he owned the tree.
Kind of cheeky, if you ask me.

It's always fun to spot pretty birds. When you think of pretty birds you tend to think tropics, but we have some good ones up here too! One of my favourites are blue jays

What a pretty woodpecker...right in your own backyard!

He's such a handsome fellow. Looks different than the ones we have here.

I smile as I think about this episode. You and the woodpecker going around the tree. But, I must admit, you captured some amazing pictures of the little guy! What a beautifully designed bird!

A few years ago we had a woodpecker that made a regular appearance on a tree in our front yard. It was fun to watch for him and see him day after day. He did the same thing, hiding and checking to see if we were still there.

That is a nice looking pet woodpecker you have there. It will be interesting to see how his season progresses with the tree.

What they must go through just to get food: hammer away for a teeny morsel over and over and push back fear and find some line between that and hunger to ignore turn away from us. I once came upon a small rabbit eating leaves, and it was so calm and focused on its breakfast, then it saw me and froze, with a fearful look in its eye. I felt so bad. That poor little creature, risking death every time it came out to eat.
