as I tried in vain to stop the tears trickling into my pillow.
I was not sure why this particular disappointment was so hard and
I don't think anyone could really know, because sometimes it's just the way feelings go.
The thing is,
I knew they would not be at the family table on Thanksgiving Day.
I knew the beautiful Christmas chaos of unwrapping gifts would be less so
and that we would not be attending Easter service together.
I knew I'd miss their birthdays . . .
or days in between with unknown challenges and dangers . . .
or days in between with unknown challenges and dangers . . .
and I can say I've hardly lost tears, at these.
I've learnt that skype calls will be blurry, delayed and disrupted,
not helpful in conversations where it's hard to be on the same page,
when we are not even on the same day,
with no familiar context to feel and share . . .
such as looking out of the window to see their friends playing outside,
or wondering if the mosquito that just flew in carries malaria.
I can't see the scrape on the knee to ask about it.
The funny thing is . . . most of this was expected . . .
but the thing that has broken me is the unexpected . . .
the parcels we can't track.
Gifts I sought out months in advance, carefully considering each item,
folding them several times and laying them out
before finally wrapping them and sending them off,
waiting for them to be touched and felt and enjoyed!
This is the joy stolen,
by a mail service that cuts open parcels and lets them sit as long as they like . . .
and I am left angry, hurt and disappointed . . .
robbed of such a simple joy.
No one, not even I, can understand why this one is so hard.
Empty handed, I wish them a Happy Birthday on the phone
and find comfort in being told it's okay.
Waiting for a gift they know is coming is still fun.
I hope the wait pays off.

Oh Anneliese, I'm so sorry. Although I'm not a missionary grandparent, I can empathize with your disappointment. The only thing I can think to do is to start praying for the mail service between you and your loved ones. I have no doubt God can overcome the postal service!
You will be in my prayers, Anneliese. What beautiful writing from the heart.
Helen
Because that's the only way you can touch ...THEM.
I do understand...many hugs to you.
Well said....and it is those unexpected things that hit us when we least expect it that are so difficult to deal with. Am praying that those parcels still get there...hopefully soon.
I understand too, having been there! Praying for you and that that parcel will arrive soon.
Praying for the postal service to cough up that package.
Also will pray for the peace that passes all understanding.
Love from NC
that's so disappointing and I can only imagine your frustration... praying for the those parcels to arrive.... soon
hugs to you my friend
Oh, I'm sorry, Anneliese. You sent your love in that parcel, a tiny bit of yourself. I feel your pain and have been on the receiving (or not receiving) end of the same thing - some hand knit sweaters for our babies, among other things.
Hugs.
Oh, how sad. I think I would be tempted to send several small packages, hoping that at least one would get there eventually!
An honest heart felt post...
Thank you, dear blogland friends for every one of your thoughts and prayers!
I just found out today that the parcels are not lost. They are sitting in a city not
too far away from where our kids live and should be delivered tomorrow . . . ten weeks after sending by air!
I felt so sad for you reading your post and all of the comments. While I was reading through everything, I was trying to think of what I could write to offer you some comfort, but then all of a sudden your comment appeared.
I am very happy to hear that your gifts of love that you sent will arrive to brighten their day as well as yours.
Audrey.
I feel the knot in your throat Anneliese. I hope and pray that the parcel will eventually reach it's destination. Things like these that are out of our control are so hard to take! I hope you can make that long trip again sometime to be with them in person!
To update about these parcels . . . they finally arrived on Saturday, August 15, looking like they had been through a war zone, with all the new tape on them, but it sounds like everything was there. Such a relief!
My mother's heart understands this post. I wish I could give you a hug right now. I will pray that they are found and loved by those who receive them.
