It's soft, faded and worn,
this tablecloth rescued from the rag pile . . .
something to hang on to from mom and dad's very beginning,
60 years ago today.
As I packed a lunch to take to the park with the kids,
I tucked it into the bag going on the stroller.
Not a big deal, just a visit to see the ducks
and share sandwiches wrapped in wax paper . . .
Yet . . . my emotions surprise me as I envision the old photo
of the table set before them . . . they were young . . . with all of life ahead of them.
From tea settings with special guests
to a picnic table in the park . . . a fourth generation.
If tablecloths could talk, what would they tell?
It's a special day and I miss you, Dad.

Ah ,Anneliese, you had me right there, in the long-ago moment. How precious that soft and worn old cloth is. The pictures from your day out will be just as precious one day as your memories of times around long-ago tables. Every time I set a table with something of my mum's I remember how she did things and how she loved to make everything, even a picnic, special.
Such a tender post and so sweet of you to share that moment.
I also thought about Mom and Dad today. Ten years ago we celebrated their 50th anniversary and it was a special day. I still remember setting up a table of memorabilia and being surprised to find a few things that they got as wedding gifts. Today we tend to get rid of things and I wonder what I have left from our wedding.
Glad you rescued that cloth from the pile. How nice to think about your parents beginnings as a couple and now how far their legacy has extended.
Isn't it remarkable that it is the simplest of things that give us such special, dear memories? This, to me, is a reminder to keep things simple in my own life - no need to be overly elaborate for a life long connection to be made. Focus on the eternal rather than the external!
Those dear little faces around the old tablecloth tell the story of a loving family and a loving God.
Precious memories! And your sweet grands enjoying their lunch on the special tablecloth...so sweet.
What a sweet post Anneliese. That table cloth is beautiful and has just made some new memories! It reminds me of a tablecloth that I now own of my mom's too! We usually use it on the card table (does anyone know anymore what a card table is?) when we have family gatherings!
