For some time we have had plans to celebrate retirement with a longer road trip,
still ending up at our favorite place in the desert.
However, as the land crossing remained closed, we began looking at other options
and booked a flight out of our small local airport to take us across.
The whole preparation was a mixture of apprehension and excitement -
finding the carrier, the process of covid testing, dropping off our car to be taken across and
then getting into that small plane!
I couldn't help but think of an old movie that the kids still tease us about,
because we apparently watched it numerous times.
It was called Night Crossing.
When everything worked out as planned, we were quite relieved!
It was literally a 12 minute flight.
An hour after our flight took off at home, we were back in our own car across the border!
The freedom to get on the road and travel was quite surreal.
We spent our first night in Richland,
a beautiful spot on the Columbia River.
That's where I'll leave it for now.

A Road Trip, how fun! Looking forward to reading about your adventures. Safe travels!
What a rigamarole to get across the border! Crazy! I've seen glimpses of your trip on IG and am looking forward to seeing more! Have fun.
Lorrie, yes, it took some investigating, but in the end it saved us a lot in car rental cost and the way back will be a normal crossing,
We are having such a great time and are so thankful that we are able to travel. ❤️
I'm glad you could work around the restrictions and have your own car for the journey! Your trip on the west side of the Rockies and our trip on the East side of the Rockies covered lots of ground. Glad you are having a great trip!!
If only we could have met up, Ellen! It's been so long!!
so you found a way around the rules............
The US customs officer was very friendly. Our documents and bags were thoroughly checked and we were sent off.
It all seems so strange that a business could legally drive our car across but we couldn’t.
What a gorgeous spot! You sure left at a good time...we have had sooooo much rain...I keep thinking of you sitting in the sunshine in the desert!! I'm jealous!
