To start off I need to say that during this episode, blogging or taking pictures was the last thing on my mind – I’m still new at this. Everything got promptly trashed and cleaned up. However, the next morning, I was able to re-enact this for your amusement. With love from the ironing queen!
Right about now I admire anyone who would never even THINK about ironing a nylon camisole. It was near the top of the pile . . . I was thinking for a tiny split second and then … no, I was hoping the iron wasn’t hot enough yet. Well, you see what happened.

And for anyone who’d like a better look . . .

I feel the need to justify myself somewhat and that is that I’ve never had this bad of an ironing blunder in my life . . . and I iron every week! I love the look of piles of laundry ironed and folded neatly, like in a store.
Oh well . . . I can go back to Smart Set and buy another $15 camy, but I was quite worried about my $90 iron.

What to do? My always loving, supportive h is snickering . . . as I go to google how to clean nylon on an iron.

So I hauled out everything that was suggested. (Oops, the salt never made it into the photo shoot, but then, it didn’t work anyways) I’m not sure what worked in the end, because I ended up soaking up some nail polish remover in a paper towel and letting the iron sit on it. I also tried scrubbing with soda and finally just sprayed it with oven cleaner (careful to cover up the steam holes). Then I sat down and had a piece of cake.
When I got back to the iron and started scraping again, it suddenly came off, all in one easy piece. I couldn’t believe it!

Now I know that you may never iron something that doesn’t need ironing, but you may just drop the hot iron on your carpet or get it close to a plastic bag . . . and then you’ll know what to do. I’m just happy my iron is good to go again.

Anneliese, I loved this post. . .oh just be happy it was your little camy from Smart Set and not your organza sleeve of your weddding dress. Remember the year we all wore our dresses at church for the brides of the decade event? I was busy patching the little hole I made before I could wear it .. .very sad. .
Oh Anneliese I have had my share of 'ironing bloopers' in my day! And then a nasty iron to clean up!!
Thanks for the chuckle although I'm sure it wasn't funny to you..smile
I knew there was a very good reason that I never iron!
Horrors like this can be completely avoided this way :)
I´m glad you commented on my blog. It´s always a pleasure to find other "mennonite" bloggers.
I will be back regularly!
To bad this happened but at least it wasn't something irreplaceable. Ironing is certainly not something I love but, alas, it is part of being a homemaker! :-)
PS. Also love all the recipes that you and your friends have been posting.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the good read, chuckle and advies. We had a group of friends in on Sunday night and I had alot of candles going. Nothing seemed to be an issue until everyone left and I went to blow out the candles. One had began to drip and 'sputter'. It had run down the candle holder, onto my end tabvle and then the wax dripped onto the carpet. I got it off of everything but the carpet. So I went on line and read about using a paper bag and iron. I have a good iron too so I was abit afraid, but using caution...it worked. That candle is now in the garbage. You have a nice blog. I will visit it now and again. Kathy
That's too funny. It's good to see the lighter side of you.
I actually love ironing also even pillow slips...but I only iron about once a month.
I too love the look of nicely ironed laundry...but I'd much prefer someone else did the ironing for me. I used to save my linens for my mother-in-law to do...now it's all up to me. I will be sure to check the temp. before ironing my camisoles...they do need ironing on occasion!
Glad your iron is OK.
just as i thought that stuff like this doesn't ahppen to anyone else, i see your blunder. it made me laugh....i don't feel so alone now! :o)
Oh my, that is amazing! I always wanted to tell you that I love how you dress. You are beautiful and a true inspiration to me.
One more reason not to iron!
I love the look of the laundry all neat & tidy too ... especially if I can hire someone to do it!
While I was reading your post yesterday, I had carrots cooking on the stove and they burned to the pot! I had totally gotten side-tracked! Baking soda worked to clean it off, thankfully :-)
Oh I love to see how human all my 'heroes' are....sigh. Anneliese...you have a humourous side which is so wonderful to be a recipient of. Thanks for sharing...I am afraid I cannot iron, wash, mend or anything. AND the worst of it is...I now have to teach my 'almost leaving home son' how to manage on his own. Gosh..finally I have to admit I am clueless as to iron settings...laundry too! I just cold wash everything and the dryer gets a lot of rest...after I have shrunk almost all types of clothing..hee hee...thanks for sharing.
I agree with Aunt Monika...another reason NOT to iron. =)
Oh Kristal. I had to laugh when I read your comment. You are so like me and your sister is so like my sister!
Thanks for sharing this experience with us! It's funny...when you described how you like the look of the neatly ironed piles of laundry, it made me laugh because my mom is EXACTLY the same way! She even irons her tea towels (which I never understood)!! However, I did not adopt my mom's love of ironing :)
I must admit, I once had a similar experience with a skirt I wanted to iron - it had 2 layers. The bottom layer was probably the same fabric as your camy. Anyway, I also burnt a hole in it :) Sadly, my iron never recovered...so I bought a new one!
Bonnie
Thank you for the iron cleaning tip, I will try this.
