I have not always enjoyed getting my fingers into the dirt, moving perennials around the garden or planting summer annuals into pots. However, it seemed like my Mom thought that a home should have some flower pots by the front door to welcome visitors and she persisted by making up pots for me and bringing them over as gifts. Then, when she’d come to visit, I’d answer the door, only to find her poking around the pots, saying, “You didn’t water your flowers.”

I don’t know when I began to see it as a fun mother/daughter time to actually plant the pots together. It seemed that when I was the one putting some effort into planting, it was so much more fun to see the beautiful results. I began to do more and more and can honestly say that I love it now. From going to the nursery and choosing my flowers, to preparing the pots and planting my own variations every year.

We don’t always do it together any more, her back is not as good as it once was, but doing pots will always remind me of my mom.
I checked back in photo albums and noticed how flower pots and hanging baskets seem to often be used as the backdrop for photos. I noticed how the grandkids have loved checking out the blooms and how the pots and flower varieties have somewhat changed, but always bring the feeling of a happy place to be.

What a nice post this is! Sweet kids and pretty flowers and nice story about moms and daughters.
Oh, I loved your story. I took a little trip down memory lane to remember all the beautiful gardens I loved to plant and tend! Loved all your photos!
LOL, my mom always used to tell me too, emphatically I might add, "Your plants are too dry. They need water!" My aunt had a different personality. When she visited and happened to find my plants dry, she asked if that particular plant needed drier conditions for better growth. Your comment brought back that memory!! I still chuckle!
I love these pictures! And thanks to you and Oma, I have flowers blooming on by my front porch ... even here on the other side of the world!
So jealous you are digging in summer flowers. I'm being cautioned to wait until June...but I am just itching to plant up a storm RIGHT NOW!
My mom always would just grab a hose and start watering before I could open the door!
Anneliese. . .I am ready to get into the garden too. I was going to plant dahlias today but the storm started and I'm still a fair weather gardener. I am much like you .. .I am enjoying it much more than I used to.
The hardest thing for me is to consider how much I want farm care people to water while I am away.
Your pots are all so beautiful.
What beautiful planters...and blooms. And I can so relate to your acquired love of 'gardening'. I have always enjoyed the flowers...but have not always been so good at keeping them blooming! But both my mom and mom-in-law inspired me in that department.
Anneliese, although I don't know you well (but am enjoying getting to know you!), somehow I knew that you have a knack for growing beautiful flowers! :-) Lovely pictures. I think you may have inspired me to get out to the greenhouses today and pick out some beauties!
My mother-in-law is so gracious that if she notices flowers needing to be watered at my house, she doesn't say a word but simply pulls out the hose herself and waters them. If anything, she'll say something like, "I know how hard it is to try to get everything done when the kids are little."
Both my mom and my mother-in-law have inspired me to tend my own plants. I have dug up many starts from their gardens and brought them to mine. I love that my gardens hold the past.
Beautiful flowers. It was Lando's mom that inspired me with the planters and pots. Sometimes I just buy them. This year I will. But she plants hers fresh each year along with the new hanging baskets she's gifted for mom's day.
Aimee really caught the love of all things flowers.
PS you haven't starred in any more of my dreams. But Steven wondered if paper towel could really work - if it was a real cooking trick!
