So, back to what I wanted to post about. The end of summer is the perfect time to strip beds down to the mattress, vacuum the mattress before turning it over, wash what you can and air out what you can’t. I don’t know if it’s the way I was raised, but I’ve always loved the smell of anything that has been dried outside and find that the “almost Fall” sunshine is especially nice. At this time your comforter is probably still packed away somewhere and if you didn’t get a chance to hang it out or spread it out on some lawnchairs before summer, now is a good time. If it’s a polyester filled duvet, you can wash it on gentle cycle, dry it in the dryer for a bit and then hang it out for that fresh scent.
- Remove the pillow cases and protectors to wash them separately.
- Put two pillows in the washing machine to balance the load. I don’t know how the front loading machines work, maybe there is no balancing act there.
Set the cycle on gentle and fill with warm or a mixture of warm and hot water.
Use about half of the amount of laundry soap that you would for a normal large cycle and add two capfuls of bleach in the appropriate dispensing compartment. Rinse twice if you feel it’s necessary. - Place in the dryer for one hour. Fluff in-between. Some people add tennis balls to help with that. Continue drying and airing them out in the sun if you can or keep drying until you are sure they are completely dry. This is very important.
I don’t buy expensive pillows, so sometimes they clump up in the wash – if that happens I just go and buy new ones! Not much lost. But if the pillows wash well, as most polyester and feather pillows do, it almost feels better to put your nose into a freshly washed pillow than a new one.
You can also handwash a pillow in the bathtub and roll it up to squeeze out the water. When you are sure it’s well rinsed and squeezed, roll it up again in some large towels and step on it, to get as much moisture out as possible. Put it in the dryer for an hour or two and then in the sun for a day. I’ve always been amazed as to the bleaching effect the sun has on stains and so it is a bonus if you can turn your pillows (or duvets) to face the sun where most needed.

Thanks for the inspiration, Anneliese. I have a way of leaving these kind of tasks for tomorrow...but why not today? You are right...there is nothing like a whiff of fresh, clean linens.
I could smell the freshness from your post. You inspire me. I loved the added touch of flowers.....a simply beautiful magazine touch once again.
This is something we do completely the same. . .I've already done mine. . .you are right ..the smell of the outdoors can not be duplicated. I often smile at the claim .. "outdoor fresh" on the softner products.
Your pictures are so lovely.
Thank you! This is so helpful to me!
I'm so glad you kept mentioning drying completely. Anything with feathers can be very difficult to get totally dry, and mold can form. Ewww. One "expert" stated that unless one lives in a very dry climate feathers are a poor choice due to molding issues.
Outside dried bedding,, and pillowcases and the top of the top sheet freshly ironed is my idea of bliss.
Thanks for the good tips and inspiration for clean fall bedding to cuddle up in.
Yes.. the smell of something dried outside instantly brings back childhood memories !
Now drying anything outside is against the strata rules!!
but leaving the window wide open and airing out the bedding is the next best thing !
I too wash my pillows..if they come out nice great! if not I buy new ones.
I wash my feather duvet in the washer too and the dryer and have been happy with the results.
I love your photos ! I had to giggle at the thought of you standing over your washer to take the photo.. I don't think I've ever taken a picture of my wash in the washer !!! smile
Something about this crisp, cooler weather that makes the homemaker in us think alike, huh? I was pulling up all my area rugs today and washing them. I hung them out to dry, and it seemed like it only took about an hour! I've never had luck washing my pillows, but perhaps I'll give it another try. Like you said, if it doesn't work out.... :-)
thanks for the tips about washing the pillows - i never know how to do them properly :)
guess i know my task for the next warm, sunny day :)
Hi Aunt Lisa, thanks for checking in on me! I have now updated my blog :)
Thanks for this post...it inspired me. Yesterday I vacuumed and cleaned my mattress, washed the bedding, and hung the duvet out in the sun - so fresh and clean!
Love, Bonnie
Yes, Anneliese, this is the time to do that airing out. I did exactly all of that after our recent camping trip to Manning, because I took my duvets along. You can't go there without duvets. It's too cold.
Yesterday I went down to Home Outfitters and found some brand new duvet covers at less than 75% down and so I snatched a few to brighten up my room once again. And yes, I love to toss those pillows on and add a footer at the end of my bed. I love changing with the seasons.
