Love Hurts

Tears are running down my face as I stand by the sink, preparing the last meal before heading to the airport. Once again, I'm struck by the fact that one could never be prepared for this part of life. Would I have signed up for this mothering thing, had I read the fine print?
On this day I feel with the momma who is leaving her child at the kindergarten door, trying hard to smile, but feeling all of her five-year-old’s apprehensions and wondering how she, herself, will make it through the next three hours. The years, they fly, and the boundaries grow. First overnights, summer camps, parties and the car keys. Little by little we give, hoping we’ve taught them right.
I also feel with the Mom who has run around for the last few weeks, making sure her barely eighteen-year-old has everything she needs to live in dorm at a college, four hours away. She wonders why she is buying to have her move. Where have the years gone? Will she remember to separate darks and lights? Will she eat right? Who will tell her to be careful? The questions keep coming and emotions are barely held in check.
I thought this would be the last of its kind. After all, she’s grown up. But, as students are heading back to school, my daughter and family are heading back to a country far away. Twenty hours of flying. Yes, there’s the Internet . . . but no cuddles with the little ones, no pancakes with sugar, no stories with chatter, no watching movies and eating popcorn. No mother-daughter shopping days or lunches. No Christmas around the tree. No, many things.

Goodbyes hurt. I became a Mom and felt like the babe in my arms was mine. I loved like never before. In fact, maybe I didn’t even know what love was before I had a child. It surely wasn’t like playing with dolls. This child had feelings and those feelings became mine. Love gives all and then lets go even though the feelings stay. And this too, because we love. Yes, love hurts.
But if I’d have to do it all again, I would.

Just one of the reasons I would .

I'm feeling this type of loss right with you as my 2nd born has left the nest as of yesterday. Eventually he'll only be 6 hours a way though. Tears have been flowing off and on today. I'll pray that God gives you comfort in knowing he cares for you and your loved ones and sees your tears...

Thanks again for sharng from your heart. I sure do know how you feel. My inlaws will arrive here on Wednesday. We can't wait! We are so thankful they are able to come. We are hoping to be able to go home for Christmas. The adoption finally came through for our two beautiful argentine girls so if all their papers are done we can finally let everyone meet them.
Blessings to you as you say another goodbye. My heart feels for you.

Hi Anneliese,
My oldest lives only two hours away...and sometimes that's too much!
My heart became so heavy as I read your post... and yet ...you are right... they are not ours...
You have helped bring more light into the world.
God bless them as they go ~

~and your tender heart in His care~

Oh, I know those feelings -- our daughter, son-in-law and our one year old granddaughter just left the east coast where we live for the west coast and we have e-mail, cell phones and plan to investigate "Skype" but it's not like touching, hugging, etc. God bless you.

Oh Aunt Lisa, your post brought tears to my eyes. May you find comfort and peace today knowing that your kids/grandkids are doing God's will in their work in Indonesia and are protected in His care.

Thinking of you...

Love, Bonnie

I'm crying with you and for you, Anneliese. I read through Ecclesiastes 3 after I read your post. I pray that God will comfort you in this season.

A time to plant, and a time to uproot...
A time to weep, and a time to laugh...
A time to mourn, and a time to dance...

Hi,

I choked up reading your post.. that's so like being parents especially being a mom.. it hurts doesn't it? In it, we thank God for the blessings, joys and love that we shared with them.. and will forever be with them.

What a beautiful reflection of your weeks events. We all share tears for different reasons. I can just see you standing over your sink and thinking and praying and asking, "How did we ever get here in the first place."
First it was just you and Herb, and you could conquer the world.
Now we can't conquer, we just support and encourage our large nest.
Letting go can be painful even if they don't live far.

Anneliese, you were in my prayers this morning that you will experience God's peace and comfort when the tears come and in turn you will be able to extend comfort to someone else. I have just said good bye to a daughter and family who have moved 2 provinces away and like you I am happy for them that they are where God has called them. I love your blog and feel a kinship to you as an unknown blog friend. Keep sharing your heart - It blesses others.

A very touching post, Anneliese! I shed tears with you...and I feel your pain...even if my own children all live nearby. One can't explain the love of a mother for a child...it is forever. May you comfort in knowing they are in God's hands...in the midst of your sadness at being apart.

I never quite know what to say when there are so many kind responses ... others sharing the burden. Thank you! I also wanted to somehow add how I am amazed at God's care! A few years ago I chose the worship song by Chris Tomlin "His grace is Enough" as my song. Last Sunday, our last Sunday with the kids at church and the day that we would drive them to the airport, the worship team led us in ... guess which song! I had tears running down my cheeks as I sang ... knowing it to be soo true!

Oh no. That feeling stays? That hospital bed strong? I hadn't thought, really thought, that far ahead until I read this. mmm...

My baby just woke up screaming because her leg was caught in the bars of her crib. That felt bad enough to me. Her being all tangled up outside of my presence. I can't imagine her leaving to another country when being in another room is about as far away as I like her to get.

I actually hadn't read your blog before, but It's very nice. I think I'll be back. I'm Heidi. Judy's (front porch) daughter.

What a sweet and heartfelt posting. My children are adults and I wonder about the future....how far will they live from us, etc. when they one day get married. A favorite quote of mine "Lord, help me with the transitions that are yet to come."
God bless you,
