The First Time I Watched TV

We did not have a TV when I was a child, living in Uruguay, but our Spanish neighbors had one. I was about 5 years old when Billy Graham came to our city. I remember this partly because there was talk about watching the crusade on TV where my dad would be singing in the choir. I'm not sure if it was live television or televised at a later time, but I feared for his life because I knew that people on TV got shot . . . and I did not want my dad to be the next target.
Now, I’m not sure if I had seen a Western show, in passing, as I played with my friend next door, or the exact reason I linked TV with shooting. I tend to think that it had something to do with President JF Kennedy's assassination. I did not yet understand all of the specifics but I remember that news - realizing a very important man had been shot and killed. This was true, because it was shown on TV.

Anneliese! That photo is just priceless. Isn't it interesting the ideas that get into our heads when we don't have all the information...

Such a cute picture of you and your brother (I assume). It was a different time then, and we wouldn't have been able to imagine what would be on TV now.
My family didn't have a TV either. My parents thought we would be better readers if we didn't have one.

It's funny to have this in common, but one of my earliest TV memories is going to some friends' house in Hartford to see the televised Billy Graham Crusade --around 1957 or 58.

Aw, what a sweet picture of you holding your little bunny! I chuckled at your story - it's funny to us now, but I'm sure it was a very real fear for you then. Made me think, what fears do we have as adults which are unfounded as well?

Great picture! And interesting how we form connections and associations upon our first introduction to something.

What a wonderful picture - what a treasure to have photos from our childhood. It sure aids the memories as your post illustrates.

You had kind of a worried look on your face there :)

I remember when JFK was shot - I was at my best friend's birthday party and we were playing musical chairs with music from the radio. The music was interrupted by the news of his death. I can remember my friend's mom saying to my mom "Should we stop the party?" - maybe that's why it made such an impression on me. My mom said "No let them have their party". It's one of my earliest memories - I was 6.

Cute photo. Isn't that interesting what stays with us as children...impressions and how we tie things together...memories.

I remember that as clear as yesterday...I think we got it so that we could watch sports...My dad loved to watch BC Lions play football, and of course we watched Billy Graham..That's along way back and not I can't understand people who are not purchasing computers.
By the way...I don't need to sit in the bathroom, rather I sit from my patio and get to see the ocean waves...

Very Sweet picture Anneliese.
Oh it makes me wonder what my grands really think about things.
I can clearly recall when JFK was shot. .and we did not have a tv then yet. School was closed (I was not in school yet)..kids sent home. .and I remember my brother having nightmares about it.

I wonder how God sees our fears.
