Back in the middle of June, when we headed to Disneyland, we were all looking forward to a wonderfully long summer of family outings, dinners, Birthday parties, picnics, visits to the park, movie nights and ending it all with the birth of a new baby.
Now all of these things have happened! Summer has ended. How quickly the days have flown by!
I’m wondering . . . does the average family realize how the days are passing? Do they realize that before they know it, three months are gone and then six and then a year?
Maybe even in a marriage . . . do I recognize that what is today won’t be forever? Do I live with the goal that every day deserves a chance . . . and that every moment is a gift?
It is these packages in time, that have made me see how intentional we have become about what we do with our kids and grandkids. There is something about knowing that our days are numbered, that causes us to plan and possibly make more memories than we would if we thought that we always have next week.
I’m learning that in a situation that I’ve fought, I have possibly received a blessing in disguise.

I just read your last two posts and, as usual, the tears are gathering. I told Julene on Sunday morning that they are in our prayers; I want you to know that you are too.
my word verification is "pityre"; how appropriate!
I think certainly there are blessings of looking soooo forward to being reunited. I can't comprehend the saying goodbye like you have.. .but I can surely imagine how your heart beats a bit faster when you hear their voices. . and get those very sweet notes . . and then remember the things that were said. .that often those of us who don't need to say longer goodbyes. .never say.
Praying for you and your dear family.
Can so relate! The weeks, months, years simply fly - and God is timeless! Our son and family are planning to come at Christmas. We are so anticipating - but as has happened before - it may not happen for several reasons. So I hope, but not too much, lest my hopes be dashed. It's holding all those feelings in tension and balance and knowing that God is in control, I'm not!
This was good for me to read Anneliese...
Once again your post is full of tenderness and deep emotion. I prayed for you as I read it as I too know how hard it is too say goodbye. Your precious family will hold all the summer memories close to their heart as they know they were created from your heart of love. Your words always bless me.
"every day deserves a chance...and every moment is a gift" - I love that!! Your post has inspired and blessed me today.
Thank you for sharing your precious moments and memories of our family with us. I understand your sorrow, since we always say good by to our children as well. We are praying for you all.
Thank you for this reminder that time is to be treasured not just lived through. It's so good to see your family cherishing each other and the time you have together. You and Herb have made good memories for your kids and for yourselves.
The emotions are evident in your writing and in our reading. It's your ability to always look for the good (even in the midst of sadness) that makes you so inspiring! One of my personal mantras is "a day at a time", so yes, I do regularly try to take in each day for what it is.
Remembering you in prayer.
You are so wise.....thanks for the reminder today to 'redeem the time!'
Intentional is the best word...Whether it's our kids, grandkids, or spouses...we must create intentional experiences that bring positive reinforcements into their lives....
Great post...I'm thinking about your heart...and all the love that you gave to them, and the love that they left with you...how special.
Time...it flows through our fingers like sand. But we have this very moment...today...and we can live it to the fullest. It is a reminder that I needed!
Though your summer was gone before you knew it...I know you have a treasure of wonderful new family memories.
Dearest Mom, the distance travelled is complete now. We're here. My heart is full. Thank you for a memorable & wonderful summer!
Good thoughts... "knowing our days are numbered" We are easily aware of treasuring vacation days that are numbered ...but somehow we prefer not to consider the 'numbered days of our life'. I agree... each day is a gift that must be lived with purpose.
