The other day I took Lovella up on her invitation to come by and pick some fresh beans in
her garden. It was a beautiful day, leaving me feeling like one of her sunflowers adorning the patch. In no time I left with almost everything I needed to make
bean soup. But, see the green stuff with the tiny purple flowers? It's called summer savory and I went to Neufeld Farms to get that.
You can't make a good pot of green bean soup without it.
Now is the perfect time to get it a farm or farmer's market. But don't wait too long. You can freeze it or dry it. I have mine hanging in my pantry to dry . . . and once it's brittle, I'll put it into a container to use all year long. . . . just like other dried herbs.

Oh good...now I know what to do with my bunch that has grown nicely from Lovella's little start she gave us. I think I'll let mine dry, too...
I think we all have a bunch growing somewhere in our gardens this year.....thanks for reminding me to dry them. How nice that you have a friend near by who offers you fresh produce. I'm sure that soup was tasty!
Oh the memories...i knew it as 'bonnen suppe' (no idea how to spell it! I just know how to eat it!). I grow savory just for this soup!!!
and now ..you know where I live. .don't be a stranger. :)
Soup looks yummy. I've been under the weather for a week now. I bet that would make me feel better! :-)
I too am enjoying my pot of herbs thanks to Lovella. And I have extra savoury growing in the garden. I used to dry it and then went to freezing it..will do both this year:)
Hi Anneliese,
Thank-you for your lovely blog, it is a delight to read. I also enjoy your daughter Jules's blog too (both of which I found via the MGCC blog which I LOVE).
Is your summer savory what we call thyme?? Although the flowers look kind of rosemaryish??
Have a lovely day,
God bless,
Selina.
Mine is growing...and I am ready to harvest it also..the smell lingers forever and it's the one and only savory for bean soup.
Sometimes I get mine at the MCC sale.
Selina,
Thank you for your comment!
Summer savory is the name of the herb . . . it is not the same as thyme and, too bad it is not readily available everywhere.
