A few years ago we decided to begin a tradition of doing a hike on Labor day Monday. So here we were last Monday, deciding on where to go this time. I had not forgotten the hike up Mt. Cheam . . . so the name Teapot Hill sounded like it may just be more my size.
I must confess the hardest part was the first ten minutes, just getting used to the immediate uphill start, and then it was quite easy going.
The slope beside the path went straight down,
the path itself littered with roots and lined with trees that had all kinds of interesting root systems above ground.
Since I was small, I've loved the feel of being surrounded by tall trees, laden with moss and ferns growing everywhere. I have this vague memory that I may have climbed this hill, coming up the other side, once or twice Before my teen years, and even as a teen, I attended a camp right below this hill and my favorite activity was hiking. Definitely more desirable than craft time or swimming.
I just know that somewhere in there I must have that valerie-valerah spirit, inherited from my dad.
Back to Monday . . . before we knew it . . . we were at the top. Yes, it was only a hill. Almost disappointing. I wonder what we can find that is inbetween a mountain and a hill.
On our way down we stopped to have some lunch
and tried to get a view of the lake through the trees.
At the bottom, we drove by the lakeside and wound through the small streets lined with summer homes.
We saw an open house sign and decided to look . . . because we could.
There were beautiful kitchens and baths
and views . . . but we were not shopping.
For dinner we packed up hamburgers to BBQ and headed to our 33 year-old family lakehouse - re-done, content and thankful for so much!

I've hiked Teapot Hill a good number of times during our church's Father Daughter camping trips to Cultus. That view brings back memories!
Looks like you had a beautiful day for your hike too!! Wonderful!
Oh I remember doing that hike a few times but it has been some time since I huffed and puffed up the incline.
I smiled at our similarities. .I've always listed hiking as my favourite sport. I remember when I was very young, hiking down to loss lake and constantly tripping over roots because looking up at the amazing old growth canopy was so amazing.
Love the name of that hill! It's nice that you got out.
What a wonderful way to spend the day.Is that really a teapot on top of Teapot Hill? And people leave it there? Love it.
I love that hike, I used to do that one at camp all the time.
Is the cool lightening tree still there?
The name with the teapot actually at the top of the hill, really makes me smile!! Loved catching up on your recent posts! Would have to get in shape for a year before I could tackle your hill!
I just read your Mt Cheam post from a couple of years ago. Makes me feel a little better about myself. We did the hill with extended family last year Labour Day weekend. Man, that was hard!! I had a really hard time breathing the entire time, but finding out soon after that I was pregnant made sense. I was really breathless the first part of pregnancy!
When the family sent out a 'hiking email' last week, I kindly bowed out of the opportunity to reach the summit...even though this year's weather was much more promising than last year's cold, cloudy day!
That looks like a fun hike, although I too struggle a bit with steep inclines. Is that Cultus Lake below? We've visited the waterslides there and only driven past the lake. It is very pretty.
Wonderful pics & a beautiful memory-making time!
what an awesome way to spend the day
It's been many years since I have done Teapot Hill. And I have also done it from camp up the other side - I think that way was harder. We had planned a family hike up Teapot end of June when kids, grandkids, siblings, nephews and nieces were in the valley for a wedding, but alas - it was the first warm day, and the kids would rather be in the lake! And what fun that was! Dairymary
What a gorgeous hike! I love hiking on forest trails as well - but a dip in that lake would have been fun too!
Oh the views from that house are amazing...

It's time I did that hike again - and yes! The first ten minutes are the hardest! It is a lovely hike though, Thanks for taking me with you.
Teapot is a quick favorite over here...but we have not been up this year! We hiked through rain forests on the Sunshine Coast today...beautiful as well. I'm with you...there is something special about walking through the forest. And we have many opportunities to do that in this part of the world!
It's been a while since we hiked Teapot. I love all those old trees and roots too. I wonder if a bunch of us were ever campers at the same time?
A lovely place to walk/hike! Glad you enjoyed your day!
