Vacation with the Snow Birds

From my chair at home again . . . I'm remembering the first time we drove into Palm Springs, no bookings made, just going by the seat of our pants, young and in love. It was the final destination of our first road trip, having stopped somewhere in northern CA, in San Francisco and LA. We loved it so much, that the following year we convinced my parents and younger sister to come with us. A memorable trip that was, all in one car! I remember my dad thinking a good way to save money would be to get a room with two queen beds…. push them together and the five of us could sleep in a row… my 17 year-old sister, in the middle. One night . . . that was it. I nearly tripped on her when I got up as she had, unbeknownst to me, moved on to the floor.

For a number of years, as we made our way down with our kids, we stayed in motels … until we learned that we could get a 2 bedroom condo for the same price. That cinched the deal for us! Maybe each generation just has a new perspective on that.

Palm Springs must be the capital of condominiums/townhouses owned by people there or elsewhere, using them as investments and renting them out through rental agencies. Oftentimes a golf course goes right through the middle, so that you can sit on the patio and watch the golfers. The pools, golfing, hiking trails, shopping and great restaurants all combine to provide a very relaxing kind of vacation.

One of the first things to do when we get there is to get groceries for our breakfasts, lunches and maybe an easy dinner. On this trip we picked up bread, bagels, waffles, porridge oats, jam, peanut butter, tuna, eggs, cheese, smoked turkey, mayo, salsa, nachos, salad dressing, lots of veggies, including greens, avocados and fruits to make salads and berry toppings. I know this may sound too much like cooking, but I enjoy the relaxed mornings, listening to the coffeemaker beep and not having to get ready to go out.

This was our first time in this particular complex. Instead of a golf course, it had  a number of tennis courts on the premise.

Those who are serious about tennis always look so cute in their outfits. I’m thinking of two friends who would love this place.

Places that we ate at were Applebee's, Ruby’s Diner, Mimis, Outback, Baja Fresh, CA Pizza and Olive Garden. Sitting outside on a restaurant patio on a warm evening was one of my favourite ways to eat dinner… providing me with fresh incentives in the kitchen and anticipation for the warm summer months to come.

But first it has to stop snowing.

I can identify with much of this post. How nice that you were able to have this vacation. Welcome home!

I wonder why he would think first to push the beds together and have mom sleep on a crack, rather than on the floor. So silly! :P

Oh man that sounds like some of our ways to save money or fit more people for overnights than we had room for growing up. Too Funny!
It's starting to snow a little down here. I don't think it's ever snowed on my birthday before...
Glad you are home safe and sound.

Oh, your last line was like a punch in the stomach!! I'm sitting here in my house with the windows open and enjoying the 75 degree weather today! It's been like this the whole week and will continue for a while yet. But your line about snow made me realize that yes, we too could still get snow! It's so hard to transition from nice weather to snow, isn't it?

Sounds like you had a great time! I want to be a snow bird when we retire someday! :-)

I begged to sleep on the floor. But Dad insisted I sleep in the middle. What teenager wants to sleep between 2 married couples?!?!?!

If this is a VRBO could you share the number? It looks like a lovely condo.

Sheila,
I do not feel comfortable posting a phone number here, but if you are okay with emailing me at foreverythingaseason.blogspot.com I'll gladly pass on the number. It was a lovely place and we would go back. Thank you for asking.

It sounds like a wonderful place to
visit! I could learn to love it there, for sure.
I'm glad you put your foot down about the bed sharing!! I had to share mine with my two older sisters growing up. It was just what was done back in those days!

Having once been down I can relate ---- and relive our memories! Loved it and hope we can do it again some day! Last time with didn't take insurance in case of health issues, but this time we would have to! It's a beautiful place and I'd love to spend Jan, Feb and March there, lol!

I like that kind of vacation! And Palm Springs is a favorite spot of ours as well.

We have hit some of the same dinner places on this trip...Ruby Tuesday, Applebee's and Olive Garden. But we have missed being able to do breakfast and lunch in our 'unit' this time.

Glad you are safely back home. Hope 'home' warms up real soon!

Glad your PS time suited you! Some year try to catch the Palm Springs Follies. Great fun and so amazing to see acts performed by people up to age 90 and retired Hollywood celebrities.

Guess your snow hits here Friday. The crocus will look nice in snow. I need some white stuff after ten days in San Diego!

Yes, PS is a wonderful holiday destination. We enjoy it there as well.
You cracked me up with the description of 5 in the bed (and the little one said...move over, and they all moved over and one fell out and the little one said.. move over......) (smile)

Oh dear, you guys came home too soon! I can see that you guys are only snowbirds in training. When I was a snowbird during my first retirement in the 1970's, my parents would go down south (with me in tow) in October and we wouldn't come back until the end of March at the earliest! You'll learn! LOL.

Oh... I love your view...and I love how your parents introduced you to PS as my parents introduced me to HA. We never pushed beds together.
Anyways...i love those cute tennis outfits...but some of us country girls could not fit in as we only wear shorts and tee shirts. That's just how we are...We will always remain country. Cheers!
