Strawberry Season

To me it always seems like the strawberry season is the shortest one around. Definetely not long enough! And although we end up paying as much or more for the local berries as for the imported ones we get year round - I wait for these berries when it comes time to do jam and fresh pies.

They may be smaller, but there is good reason for that.

I love how the color goes right through the berry . . .

and how there are those that are not quite perfect, but oh, so sweet! They are meant for the eating of the strawberry picker and cook, I'm sure.

One flat makes up a large bowl for four batches of jam and some extra for a pie.

I tried a new glaze recipe that we will be showing at the Lepp Farm Market Pie Class tomorrrow evening. If you live in the area and would like to learn about making pies, I think there are still some openings. The proceeds of the class cost go toward a kitchen for Matthew's House, a respite home soon to be under construction, for children with life-limiting disabilities. It will be a wonderful evening all around!

Beautiful Anneliese! I'm looking forward to tasting that pie. Do you make freezer jam or cooked jam?

I'm thinking I better get some berries for jam...quick, before the local strawberry season is over. Your pie looks most yummy!

Our season is on too - early this year. Our good friends have a strawberry farm and we spend quite a bit of time there in the last week of June and first few of July. There is nothing sweeter than fresh from the field strawberries!

Beautiful pictures! Yummy looking pie! Our strawberry season is over. Would you believe that I didn't get any fresh ones this year? I guess it's like you said, the season is just too short!

Did you say you were making strawberry pie? My cherry pie is melting in our mouths...put it is too runny...will need to modify out a few things.
I sat him down and suggested he have a warm piece of cherry pie? "Warm?" he said?

Those are definitely the best strawberries - small and sweet! Love fresh strawberry pie with glaze! Yum! Wonder what you'll be making in August when I'm coming down your way to visit bro and sis with their families!

Fresh, local, red and sweet through and through strawberries are worth the wait. I'm planning on picking several buckets full this weekend in a local field, and freezing them. A strawberry pie is also in the plans. Yours looks scrumptious!

oh YUM! I agree strawberry season is perhaps the shortest season. Our season was earlier and shorter this year than ever before.... and I agree with Ellen, I'd love a piece of that pie! :)

Our strawberry season is short and long past here in Oklahoma but, your post brings back childhood memories of the strawberry festival held annually the first weekend in May in Stillwell, OK. I haven't been in many years but, the one thing I remember is that you could get all the free strawberries and ice cream you wanted.
