Bridge Update

A year ago I posted a few photos of the new Port Mann Bridge going up alongside the old one. At that time I had not been across the bridge for a while and it was a sight that took me by surprise as we came down that hill toward the river and saw, what looked like, massive parts of a sailboat going up.

This is what we see now . . . a year later.

The Port Mann Bridge has been a significant landmark for me for as long as I've lived in Canada . . . forty five years to be exact . . . and I always thought it was quite a sizable bridge.

Funny how one begins to see it in a different light with this majestic looking,
ten lane, suspension bridge going up alongside it - overpowering it in so many ways.
I'm looking forward to the day when we will be taking our first trip across the new one,
but for now we still just gaze at it as we drive by . . .
seeing a side we will not see once the old bridge comes down.

Speaking of which, this week we still have several reasons to cross it with our guests -
because there are a lot of great things to see on the other side.

Have fun on both sides of that bridge! Great shots of both!

Love the new bridge...and won't even complain about paying a toll to cross it!

The old bridge comes with many memories. We used to see if we could hold our breath while crossing the bridge...from one end post to the other. I could...back in the day when there was not much traffic!

It has been so interesting seeing it slowly go up. Our son was invited to visit it since he was part of the steel that is part of the bridge.

I can't believe Judy was able to keep her breath across the span of the bridge. Fun.

It certainly changes Vancouver's skyline, doesn't it? Great shots.

It's blocking the view!

Wow...reminds me of the Sydney Lanier Bridge we cross going to our beach island. It is so much bigger and more impressive than the old one it replaced also.

It's beautiful - so appropriate for its setting!

In June of 1964 I was standing under the orange arch of the shiny new bridge at the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. P.A. Gaglardi (Minister of Highways)and W.A.C. Bennet (Premier of BC) were in attendance, throwing bronze medallions to the crowd as souveniers. I still have mine. On the way home, my uncle, who took me, commented on the lack of traffic on the four lane 401 TransCanada highway and said that the bridge and feeway were "overbuilt". We saw maybe ten cars on our way back to the Valley.
