The Apple Tree

My grown up boy just dropped by to check up on our back yard makeover. I watched him as he picked up a gnarled trunk of a small tree that we’d just uprooted. It was just an old, almost 20 year old apple tree that was diseased, dwarfed and never really produced any good apples. That’s one way of putting it.
But . . . ( big sigh) a time where I’m reminded once more that there is a season for everything. I remember a day when he came home from school with a container in which he had planted, he told us, an apple tree. It was probably about second grade. The students had most likely learned about planting seeds and trees growing from seeds, so he had taken the seeds from his lunch apple and planted them, full of hope and big expectations. He didn’t know that in reality nothing would be happening. To his delight and our surprise, one day something green came up and sure enough it grew. Eventually we planted it in the back yard. It grew slowly, but it was an apple tree nonetheless, bearing its first fruit just a few years ago.
The tree was small, as were the apples, but the memory attached to it always gave me a special feeling. A reminder of a young boy full of hope and that miracles do happen, even against all odds. So, today in my heart, I lift a prayer of thanks to the God Who cared to bring delight to a child who has now grown into a man with big expectations of a big God.

Great story depicting the faith of a child. I recall how I was taught a lesson through our son...he kept praying for the imposssible, while we tried to tell him that he had to move on. The impossible came to be! Faith that can move mountains...and grow apple trees...is the kind of faith we need.

Awww, what a great story! I love that Ben planted the tree with the seeds from his own apple believing that it would grow...and it actually did! This reminds me of the song, "Johnny Appleseed".

I'm surprised how many our kids don't want to give up their child hood memories. He probably climbed it with his friends.
We took down a grape vine the other day, similiar to yours....Oh My...
There were questions and Why?
I find it most amazing.
We sing Johnny Appleseed every Sunday.

I have a 9 year old son who does that very thing whenever he's given the chance. He's full of wonder and faith about a seed's ability to grow despite any circumstances.

Several years ago, he brought a tiny little redbud sapling home from my parents' house and insisted that we plant it. It's now taller than me and needs to be transplanted, b/c I just stuck it in my flower bed not thinking it would grow!! Ahh, the wonder of a child. Thanks for sharing that story. I'm enjoying reading your blog, found it on Mennonite Girls Can Cook.

Well...clearly if your son had found our daughter earlier, there would have been very easy access to some great fertilizer and the apple tree would have grown even beyond everyone's belief, including B's..just kidding! It is a lovely story and I very much enjoyed hearing about the heart and faith of your boy, which has very much made him the man he is today. Thanks.
