I don’t know exactly when this happened, but I have become a little bit of a gardener … at least when it comes to doing flower pots. Last week I drove out to the nursery and got some bedding plants and a few trays full of basket stuffers for whenever the time and a nice day would come around. While there, I ran into a friend and told her how I’ve always been attracted to the violets, pinks and mauves but, since we repainted our house, those colors just don’t seem to go. She said, “Oh, what you need to do is, think Mexican.” Wouldn’t you know it, that thought helped me and off I went to choose bright reds, yellows and even orange.
Saturday was the day. My old pots and baskets were all lined up along the patio. I dug around the dirt in each of them, removing roots and old dirt from some of the tops and adding fresh potting soil. Then I took a pail with soapy water and scrubbed the outside of the pots to clean off last year’s stains, and snails that may have attached themselves over the winter.

Then the fun part began. I divided the plants amongst the pots, reading labels as to which ones like the shade and which ones like more sun.

Next, starting with the centre, I dug up in the loose soil and placed each little plant, pushing the soil hard against it to tuck it in well.
For my pots that get the morning sun and mostly shade, I planted begonias, fuchsias, torenias, lobelia and a white geranium in the middle. I know geraniums like more sun, but I like the way they fill the center.

My window boxes, facing the afternoon sun, got some fancy petunias and alyssum.

The hanging baskets by our back patio also got petunias.

The various pots on the patio were filled with dwarf daisies, a type of chrysanthemum,

a splash of trailing verbena,

yellow daisies with brown centers,

and a Figaro mix of dwarf dahlias.

A new plant I look forward to watching this summer is a climbing mandevilla.
It came with a small wire trellis, but when I re-potted it, I also stuck in an old wooden one, having big hopes for growth.

Every pot got a good watering with fertilizer and the job was done. Now I just need some patience. Which reminds me . . . I still plan to get some impatiens for some of my shaded areas.

oh your colors are wonderful.
I have ventured off from my regular pinks and purples from time to time. .and then my roses bloom and it drives me nuts all summer long.
This year. . .I'm back to pinks and purples. .but I love the mexican look . . You'll have to give us some update shots from time to time.
I love reds, oranges, and yellows...Come by and help me create mine this year...I'm off to do that this weekend. It's fun and allows for some freshness every year.
Do you find this therapeutic?
Hee hee...isn't there always a few more plants to buy? This time of year I am constantly picking up a few more lovelies, and web surfing nurseries to see what else it out there.
My grandparents had a full time cook and a full time gardener. If I had the chance, I'd go for a full time gardener any day, and bushels of cash to spend on plants.
So wonderful to have a season of fresh color, isn't it? My gardening isn't as far along as yours, but last weekend I was given a hanging basket and a potted bucket which I'm very excited about.
wow, looks great! i have to say i had to check back on last year and look at what you were doing and i loved seeing the pics of your mom helping you with the planters. i also loved the pic from years ago and the ladder with the planters going up it... looked lovely. i really like the new color scheme this year, very festive! personally i was looking at your pics from last year and the blue and red combo is my favorite :)
Beautiful!! Motivating me to get my flowers planted this weekend :)
Lovely Anneliese...
You've inspired me to get my pots organized. I stopped at a great nursery today on my hill owned by a little old man and I splurged! I bought myself a Dogwood, Lilac and Peonie...but those have nothing to do with the pots on my patio. Love the colorful pots you put together...
I too am always drawn toward the pinks and purples (funny that I don't wear those colors in clothing, but I like them in flowers). But our house is taupe with a brick/rust colored front door, so the "Mexican" colors would definitely be a better match for my house too. This year I'm going with apricot and yellow for some of my pots! Would love to see how yours look later in the season...
I like that advice...think Mexican! It's all looking good over there. I left my usual pinks out of the colour scheme last summer...and we quite liked it.
Aunt Anneliese, amazing the beauty and detail that God puts into his creation and how it brightens our lives.
Praise be to Him!
Love you!

Oh you are so way ahead of me..I haven't visited the greenhouse yet. Your flowers are beautiful...like the colors you chose. I usually choose pinks and purples too but have veered off on occasion and then find I don't mind all colors put together..the 'wildflower look'.
