The Art of Hand Writing

As you can tell from the poem above, my grandfather, the only grandfather I ever knew, had beautiful handwriting! I always loved how his capital letters had extra twirls and just looked
like they were drawn, rather than just written.

I used to take more pride in how I write . . . what I mean by that is that I was able to focus better . . . but I find that I don't really enjoy writing any more. In fact, I get frustrated that it takes too long and takes concentration to make it look nice, or even legible. I much prefer the quickness of the keyboard where I can delete when necessary and actually think with my fingers. At least that is what it almost feels like.

Makes me wonder . . . what will become of handwriting? . . . or will we continue to appreciate those little handwritten notes and cards? When I really think about it, handwritten words may require a little more effort, but somehow they still convey a special message.

I appreciate how everyone has their own unique style of handwriting, which in itself is a part of the message. A person's handwriting is a part of them, as much as the color of their eyes or the way they walk . . . and such a beautiful reminder of the one who wrote the note . . . no matter the style or how it looks.

Your grandfather's handwriting is gorgeous and is a visual treat even if I don't understand much German. I am with you; handwriting feels sooo slow now and difficult to push that pen or pencil along. I do love getting my friends Gail's handwritten notes as her lovely handwriting is part of what makes her special.

I so share your thoughts, Anneliese! In fact was discussing handwriting with my granddaughters just the other day.
It is no longer 'taught' in school as it was when we went to school.. and yes.. how much easier and quicker to write with our fingers on a keyboard... but at the cost of losing the creative, personal expression of the person writing. I do miss that !
I love that you have and treasure that card from your grandfather! It IS beautifully written.

that is amazing handwriting! I type WAAAY faster than I write, but I do like my handwriting and feel it's just so much more personal to hand-write a note or letter.

I love the handwriting and the sentiments your grandfather wrote. A lovely keepsake! It seems like people put more effort into handwriting in those days.

My, what beautiful penmanship! Much like you I prefer my laptop and type faster than I write. My handwriting has become very sloppy. Sure would be interesting to hear what a handwriting analyst would say!

I so agree with you, Anneliese...and have often wondered what will become of cursive handwriting. I love to see people's handwriting...it is part of who they are!

Your grandfather had it down pat.

I recognize your grandfathers handwriting in the sense of the era it was written. It looks so much like my grandfathers writing.
I have never liked my handwriting. .and yet I would recognize so many notes from friends and family by the script alone. I love the point you make.

As a child I aspired to match my Dad's handwriting. I practiced and practiced but never managed to get that beautiful result. My children never learned the art of handwriting and I regret that. They only know how to print. It is a lost art.

As a Missionary's child away from home for my schooling years I LOVED my Mom's handwritten letters. I felt connected, touched, comforted by her handwriting. (Still have 33 yrs of letters to each other). Occasionally she'd type a letter - those were just full of information - not really Mom!

Great that you have something from your grandfather. I have stuff written in the same script from my grandmother. I can't read much in the language anymore, but wonderful handwriting....
I try to write handwritten notes to people. Not as much this year, but more via email. Miss the personal touch from friends.
