We Gave Her Wings

When Kristal was in her late teens, she gave me a magnet that I had on my fridge until a few years ago. I wish I could find it now, because I don’t remember the exact words . . . only that they had something to do with giving her wings . . . and the whole idea of letting go.

The test came when we dropped her off at Bible College in Portland. On the way down she was sitting in the back, with her legs stretched out and resting between our two front seats. I took her feet and held them for a while, remembering the tiny imprints the nurse made in her baby book. What happened to the girl who used to scream when we dropped her off at the church nursery?  In spite of the fact that, at seventeen, she was quite sure of herself, I could not help but still see her as our little girl. We helped set her up as comfortably as possible and then got back in our car ... where I let my tears flow.

A few years later, unsure of where her life was heading, she expressed her longtime desire to attend Azusa Pacific University. Realizing how strong this desire was, we encouraged her to try out for a scholarship and see how we could make it work. The next Fall the three of us were headed down the I-5 again. This time a little farther south. It was no easier than the trips before had been, but we knew it was a wonderful school for her.

As the story goes . . . it did not take long for a certain American boy to notice that she was different and special, of course. He wooed himself into our lives too and before they graduated they were married.

I’m sighing big-time. Somehow I was blindsided. It was Julene who was making plans to go overseas and the reality that both daughters would be living out of country was hitting hard. I cried lots . . . fighting with the Lord for allowing this to happen. . . . but in the end He gave me enough happiness and sadness to allow me to see His grace at work.

In the past thirteen years, including our first trip to Oregon, we got into a nice pattern of small visits. Holidays, weddings, a funeral, a baptism, babies, vacations . . . there were lots of reasons to go down . . . and for Kristal or the family to come up. Never did I feel like she lost interest in family here . . . and Shaun always encouraged her to go, if she needed to. Her heart was here with us in many ways, for which I’ve been grateful, even though, numerous times, she said that she would likely never move back.

That is, until a couple of months ago. It would seem that the place they loved was not to become their forever place after all. And after the number of moves they have made because of the nature of Shaun’s job, they began to talk about wanting this to end and not to keep moving further away from family. The locations they talked about kept moving closer to Abbotsford, and finally . . .

. . . here we are. Awaiting her return . . . the girl that left as one . . . coming home with a husband and three kids. I’ve been mulling it over for a few months now and it still seems so surreal!

No one knows the number of times I’ve dreamed of picking up grandchildren at their school and taking them home for cookies and milk, or the times I’ve watched the children sing at church and imagined a certain little girl or boy in the group. No one knows the times my daughter called, crying, because a child was sick . . . and she was tired . . . and I could not help.

A place is ready for them and hopefully a job soon too. Our lives will change, I know, and I pray for grace for all of us in this learning curve that begins a new season.

I’ll be in Colorado this week, helping with whatever I can do to help and in a few weeks, the Lord willing, we’ll be picking them up at the airport in Vancouver.

I love how you write Anneliese. I could feel your emotion and your heart tug to have your daughter and her family back home. I know you will have a very busy week but I also can imagine the buzz in the house as they all anticipate a very exciting move towards Grandma's house.

i could feel with you the letting go process as you dropped her off at school.....we did the same with both of our girls.....along with tears and lots of pondering. As I see the photo of your beautiful daughter and her family with the rail tracks heading out behind them...one leg of their journey is almost complete, they have a new destination with a welcoming family at this end....and God knows the rest of the story. Praying for you as you go to help your family pack up, and just love into their lives and celebrate together.

So exciting!!! I'm not looking forward to the time when I'll have to let our kids go off onto their own adventures...but you were able to do it and now you get to enjoy a return :)

How wonderful! I too have a child that says "Mom, I'll never live in Phoenix again". While my heart aches at the thought of not being close (by location) to he and his wife, I'm thankful that our love and relationship keeps us close despite the distances. And who knows, maybe someday I'll be writing a post like yours! Your post was beautiful, and I'm so pleased that some of your grandma dreams will soon be realized.

this is super exciting!!! I too, know how difficult it is to drop kids off to school that's far from home and cry those rivers of tears, and can empathize with you. you're excitment at having them closer is totally felt through your writing......

A beautiful post Anneliese...you have been blessed over and over
The quote about giving them wings...resonates with my heart...I will give them back to you..
"We raise our children to serve God...not us. We want them to become dependent on their heavenly Father....not us. We want them to learn that He will always be there...we won't"
My daughters have reminded me of that many times.

We also look forward to having our niece and her husband closer so we can get to know her lovely family. Somehow it always seems someone is missing at family gathering. Kristal & Shaun we really are glad you are moving closer to our families. Love aunt Mary

I'm soooo happy for you Anneliese; for Kristal; for your grandbabies; and for what the move means to my daughter too!! Papa will enjoy this as well as aunts and uncles - so much easier for family reunions! Praying for Shawn and his adjustments. Wish we could offer Shawn what your hubby has given our kids! Even more reasons now to get together!

Beautiful post indeed!! The quote that I remember is that we give our children roots that go deep and wings to fly. not sure if that is the one you were thinking of or not...but one that has always resounded in my life with having both our girls living far away!! How exciting for you to have Kristal and her family moving back home!

Glad to get caught up on your posts tonight. Love the "wash day" pictures...so cute and reminiscent. When I was a stay-at-home mom, I hung my clothes on the line, but once I went to work...that came to an end! I am so happy that your "girl" and her family are moving back close to you. I'm know you are a sweet grandma and now you will get to do all the things you've dreamed about. Wonderful!

Oh Anneliese, Congratulations! I thought I was the only one who spends time imagining 'what if' my daughter lived close by. Whenever I go to a craft fair or clothing shopping by myself-and I see a mom and her daughter; I can't help but feel envious. And the grandkids...well don't get me started. But I'm so happy for you!

Anneliese, so happy for you and I can honestly say that I think I know how you feel. I believe our daughters both lived in Phoenix at the same time, for a short time. Now, we share your joy...she too is coming home with her husband and 2 children. I always said that while I missed her, I just wanted her to be happy, to be where God wanted her to be. But I always wished that they could come back. Now I can hardly believe it is happening.
Enjoy your last 'visit'.

Loved this post. It touched my heart in so many ways. I have two young girls and just thinking about not having them close tears at my heart. You have endured much.

Also it touches even closer to home as we are finally moving back home after being so far away for ten years. It still doesn't seem real. I can't wait for my girls to experience what it is like to have family so close. I feel your heart. Hope to meet you when we get home.
Blessings,
Leana

Most touching post, Anneliese. I can't even imagine what it would be like having my children and grands living 'far removed'! So happy for you, that you will have Kristal and her family in your backyard soon!
