Another special treat of the day was the fact that we could enjoy lunch around the same table . . . rather than emailing each other and talking about what we are making (or not making) on a particular day.
The next stop we made was at a Ten Thousand Villages Store in Vancouver,
where we got in on an anniversary celebration. For 65 years, TTV has partnered with artisans in low income countries to provide a market for them and the ability to earn an honest living to sustain their families.
It's all about helping and providing for those less fortunate.
This brings me to another highlight of the weekend, when my H and I had the opportunity to attend a dinner where we learned more about the Water for Life Initiative by Global Aid Network, also known as GAiN.
A friend of ours has been involved in this work for about 7 years now and when he shared about how villages in Africa have been helped by the provision of a well, you can see how he has literally left part of his heart in these villages. Amazing stories . . .
I knew that poor drinking water causes a lot of illness and death, but I did not know that more children die of diseases related to contaminated water than the loss due to war, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, combined. Contaminated water is the silent killer . . . killing four thousand children every day.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Often, just 30 - 80 meters below their feet are aquifers of pure, disease-free drinking water. By drilling one deep-water well per village, Global Aid Network (GAiN) helps break the cycle of disease and death and transforms communities for a lifetime.
Once a deep-capped well is drilled, villages are challenged to be involved with additional opportunities that continue to improve their community. In each village, training is provided in well maintenance, repair and best water-use practices. People are educated about sanitation and hygiene practices and as a follow up, medical and dental clinics are provided, further demonstrating the love of God, in word and deed.
As it says on the GAiN website . . . In Africa they say, water is life . . . One water well can transform a village . . . lifestyles are transformed, economic activity is enthused . . . health is restored and hope is renewed.

Great weekend for you MG's! Sounds like GAiN might be a pretty worthy cause once you have fed all the hungry children in the Ukraine! And considering that most of the MG's live in a part of the world that has the BEST water in the world...that would be pretty cool.
Glad you enjoyed your weekend and had the opportunity to visit with your friends. Samaritan's Purse also works to get funding for clean water in places where the need is desperate. Certainly a wonderful way to demonstrate God's love.
You girls are having so much fun with this - I'm thrilled for all of you!
I rejoice with you in the huge success that has been yours as MG's. Now you need to start on book 2 - Mennonite guys can cook 2 (or the favorite recipes of the Mennonite guys - even if they don't cook!) Our Mennonite son-in-law makes fantastic coffee and delicious Saturday morning breakfasts! LOL Great photos!
A great weekend indeed! So good to be with you...
I was made more aware of the dire need for clean water in a missions lesson I taught at our church recently. I'm thankful that our churches and organizations such as GAin are reaching out.
It was so fun to finally meet you in person! You were all just as nice as I had imagined! Regarding your comments about water...isn't it amazing what we take for granted here in North America. It's awful that anyone should die from having to drink polluted water, when we spend so much just to drink 'designer' bottled water in this country.
Such a good time we had on Saturday!
Yes - I think GAiN would be a wonderful next project. I had no idea that more children died of contaminated water than those other ills combined.
I bet it feels empowering to be able to help thorugh the proceeds of your book. So often we feel helpless in light of these massive problems. God bless you girls as you bless others.
Another great day together...keeping our dream alive.
Thank you for sharing what GAIN is doing. I love hearing how organizations like this one make such a difference. At our Thanksgiving Banquet someone from SPERO society showed us how they are making prefab homes to be erected in Haiti. There are many unselfish people out there doing their part to change the world. We can help by supporting them.
I am so thankful for worthwhile organizations that do this kind of work, and I appreciate that you took the time to share this post with others. It is so important for us to be aware or reminded of the privilege of helping with these life changing opportunities.
