On Learning Curves and Teaching

Yesterday was a full, enjoyable but challenging day.
I could not believe how tired I was at the end of the day. So tired,
that I found myself composing a post while I was sleeping . . . honestly!
It was a good post, that's all I know. I can't remember anything else.
All I know is that it was not up when I got up, so I will just have to start from scratch. Is there anyone who can understand this feeling?

I'm finding that as I plod along this journey with the Mennonite Girls,
I am learning things about myself.
One of the hardest things to face is the fact that I don't do well at public speaking.
 I think I'd like to  . . .  I want to . . . but when I try, my thoughts don't flow.
I need the keyboard to think. My fingers do the talking best, when no one is there.
So yesterday, when a certain film crew was there to interview Lovella and myself about our journey into, and with, MGCC, I froze. How does a mind see a script and tell it . .. how does a heart overflowing with feelings put them into words when a camera is looking at you? The film crew assured us that everything was fine and that sometime next month they will have a segment ready to put on our church website, part of a series that is being done to depict the pulse of the church in action.
Big sigh here! The rest of the afternoon and evening went well!
Lepp Farm Market staff always do a great job in preparing and setting up their open style kitchen for guests. Any given class will seat about 20 - 25, using the bar counter, as well as a number of high round tables.
It is not like a cooking class taken at school, rather like a dinner out, where you watch the cook in her/his kitchen and enjoy the entrees as they come out of the oven.

We prepped for a class on Winter Comfort Foods -Mennonite Style . . . beginning with a salad and freshly baked bread.
For our main entree Lovella made her amazing cabbage rolls. Of course, we rolled up a couple of recipes mid afternoon to put into the oven, and then just a single recipe, to show how, during the teaching session.
Judy brought a dish of make ahead garlic mashed potatoes and made one there to show and share tips.
In a class such as this, each cook has utensils and ingredients ready to go before class. Kathy baked several Bodentortes at home and had this tray ready when she got miked for the visible presentation, with Bev assisting her.

After the main meal, coffee was served, along with a beautifully plated dessert.
Guests visited around tables and felt free to ask questions. We all got the feeling that for them it truly was an enjoyable evening, with the benefit of knowing that the proceeds for this class all go to Mathews House in Abbotsford. I enjoyed how many lingered long after class was over, making the most of their evening out.

I know exactly what you mean Anneliese! I owned a business for approx. 8 years with a partner and she was so great at public speaking, writing wonderful brochures and dealing with the public. I on the other hand was the total opposite....much more comfortable unpacking shipments, pricing, doing the bookwork, etc. in the back room! My words always turn into babble! However, I've seen some clips of you and you look so relaxed and elegant - I'll bet with a bit of practice, you will be great. Wish I could see your latest clip and attend your class - looks like such fun! I'm sure you did fine too! Have a restful wknd. - you all deserve it!

This post could me mine...could I copy and paste the whole thing? I feel like you...where are my words when I needed them? How could I have such moments of blank?
Anyways...the rest was all so fun. I love your photos...monday I'll put mine up.

Yep, don't like the public speaking thing either! But you seem relaxed when I've seen some of your clips. You cover your anxiety well!

You should have seen me nodding at the first part of your post, as I have dreamed posts and wakened to find them gone, gone, gone.
Public speaking is a challenge for me too. I'd say, though, that if the film crew was satisfied, it must have been just fine.

Sounds so delicious!!! It's been a long time since I made cabbage rolls! I might just have to make them again real soon.

Don't beat yourself up Anneliese. We are all gifted in different areas. Keep righting your blogs and let those speak who seem more gifted. That's what brings the uniqueness to this group.
But I'm not saying that we can continue to improve. But we can all choose where and what that should look like. Public speaking is a challenge for all most..Toast Masters is a great tool.

Anneliese! I know exactly how you feel...really. Well maybe not exactly but I know that I can communicate so much better on paper than verbally. I sometimes am able to deliver sound bites that are ok but not so much a whole paragraph. And...some of my best thoughts come to me at night. I can even speak Russian good at night in my head LOL!
Do you remember the Apostle Paul and the passage where he speaks about how bold he can be in his letters but not so much in person...
I'm going to have to look that up and make sure I'm remembering that correctly. Anyway...all that to say "I hear you"

Anneliese, you sound like a perfectly normal person who leans more toward introversion than extroversion. Your thoughts flow more freely when you have time and space to think them. Apparently some of the most influential people in the world are introverts, including the Queen. I notice she mainly reads her speeches. Know you are in good company and appreciate your wonderful, thoughtful strengths! I feel that with time and practice, you will easily speak in public, but with your own gently, thoughtful style.

Good luck!

Sonya

PS I am also more introverted than extroverted.

From reading the comments...I know you are not alone. I too would much rather put my words on paper...than try to deliver them orally. As for composing posts in the middle of the night...that seems to work quite well at times. But it helps if they are remembered in the morning!

Last night was fun...and I'm usre your interview will come out looking great!

I enjoyed working in the kitchen with you again. I always enjoy those classes, and when it's over...gathering at the counter with my girls chatting about the class while enjoying a plate of food.

Hey Anneliese, I have scripted things in the tub soaking and when done, it is gone, only to start from scratch...Don't be hard on yourself.
I love reading your blog...Mostly I lurk, but today I wanted to encourage you in the gifts the Lord has place in you to be used for the uplifting of the Body of Christ...no matter what country we live in.
Thank you..and if the Lord wills, I may someday meet you to see the real live person and ask a ton of ?'s
